$200 Million Worldwide Gets Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters a Sequel

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013) Movie PosterIt may have only made $54 million at the U.S. box office and suffered from poor reviews (the film currently boasts a 15% freshness rating over at reviews aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes as of this article), but Tommy Wirkola’s “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” turned a nice little profit overseas, raking in over $150 million. That gave the horror/action/comedy a groovy $205 million gross from a $50 million production budget.

In Hollywood, that’s a no-brainer for a sequel.

So it comes as no surprise that Paramount and MGM have officially begun developing a sequel to the film starring Gemma Arterton and Jeremy Renner as an unlikely brother and sister team of witch hunters, equipped with ridiculous weaponry and one-liners.

The first movie had as much sense as a movie about Hansel and Gretel growing up to be witch hunters, but it’s definitely one of those movies that delivers on its own premise. When you buy a ticket to see a movie called “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters”, you expect to find Hansel and Gretel all grown up and hunting witches. Which was exactly what you got.

So what’s in store for Hansel and fine looking sister Gretel? Possibly more witch killin’, but I could be wrong. (Probably not, though.)
