The two main characters did not die - pay attention to the effect of the ghost tear shed by Nicholas' spirit on Stephen's body, and listen closely to the beeping of the heart monitor attached to a supposedly-dead Nicholas. There's a reason why Nicholas' character says at the end that "2002" is now "a two-men team" (as opposed to a one-man-one-ghost team) - it's all about taking fate in your own hands, and realising that "destiny" is what you make it out to be. Overall it's a rather enjoyable film. One must say that the idea of a spirit-hunting police unit with partner pairings of a human and a ghost are not all that common (if ever done at all) in Hong Kong movies.
