I’m currently trying to read Dean Koontz’s “Odd Thomas”, the book that Stephen Sommers will be adapting when the film goes into production very soon in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Emphasis on trying. I haven’t gotten very far. Last time I checked, I was around page 60 or so and slightly bored by the unrealistic characters and dialogue. Do twenty year old girls who work in ice cream shops really talk like that? In Dean Koontz’s world, apparently.
Anyways, “Odd Thomas” is about to go into production with Anton Yelchin as the titular hero, a short order cook with dreams of being a tire salesman, who can also see dead people. And shadowy, slivering things called “bodachs” that show up whenever something really, really bad is about to happen. Willem Dafoe will play the Sheriff in the town where Odd lives, and Addison Timlin is Odd’s soulmate/girlfriend/oh-so-clever girl in her own right.
Sommers has now added rapper-turned-actor 50 Cent, aka Curtis Jackson, to the cast as a blind D.J. name Shamus Cocobolo. Jackson, apparently taking time out from the 100 or so direct-to-DVD action movies he’s producing, writing, and starring in nowadays, joins fellow castmates Patton Oswalt, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nico Tortorella.
I haven’t gotten to the part where Jackson’s DJ is introduced in the novel yet, so I have no idea who he is, but Variety describes Cocobolo as someone who “helps the titular hero uncover a Satanic plot.”
