Austin Chick’s gritty revenge thriller “Girls Against Boys” has landed online with a whopping series of clips, for a total of 8 minutes of footage. The film is currently playing down SXSW this week, so if you get the chance, check it out. Chick last directed 2002’s Sundance fave “XX/XY” and more recently, the Josh Harnett film “August”. The film stars would-be horror starlet Danielle Panabaker (“Friday the 13th” remake, “The Crazies”, and the upcoming “Piranha 3DD”) and relative newcomer Nicole LaLiberte dishing out the punishment to the men in their lives. The bastards had it coming. Probably.
“Girls Against Boys” is a character-driven, psychological thriller about two girls on a killing spree in New York. With edgy and ironic humor and a darkly meditative tone that is far more European or Asian than typically American, it is also a coming-of-age story about a young woman coming to understand how the world really works. It’s a ride for sure, and it even gets more than a little gruesome, but it’s character-driven rather than action-driven, and it has a psychological twist that’s more like a way of reading the film than a big reveal.
The girls are Panabaker and LaLiberte, going up against the boys, Liam Aiken, Michael Stahl-David, and Andrew Howard.
