Can’t get enough of the MacManus brothers and dying to see a third installment? Well, you’re probably going to have to wait a little while longer. Although it opened to middling box office ($10 million from an $8 million production budget), “Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day” has gone on to clear $23 million from DVD and Blu-ray sales alone. Just like the original, audiences just seem to love this franchise more when they can watch it at home — preferably in the comforts of their living room with a six-pack and some buddies to goof around with.
With that kind of success, you just know a “Boondock Saints 3″ is around the corner — in some form or fashion. According to writer/director Troy Duffy, a part three in theaters may not happen anytime soon … since he’s eyeing a TV series instead.
Speaking to We Got This Covered while out promoting the Blu-ray re-release of the first “Boondock Saints”, Duffy said as much:
We’ve been approached to do a possible Boondock Saints TV series. So the fans may be getting a part 3 as a television show. We might be able to pull that off….I actually called both Sean and Norman and they both said “hell yeah, we’ll drop everything.”
Duffy adds that they’re looking at doing the show on a cable network like HBO or AMC, where they can remain “faithful” to the movies. That means, of course, the good ol ultra-violence that the movies are known for. Of course, AMC may be pretty forward thinking compared to all the other basic cable nets, but it’s a far cry from, say, HBO, Showtime, or Starz. Personally, I’m hoping Duffy lands the show with Starz, home of blood and guts and sex shows like “Spartacus” and “Camelot”. (Okay, so it’s mostly just sex with “Camelot”.)
Thanks to Josh for the heads up.
