First Look at Mech Pilots Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi from Del Toro’s Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim (2013) Movie Comic Con PosterAfter releasing that Comic Con poster (left) for Guillermo Del Toro’s sci-fi monster movie “Pacific Rim”, the studio has released a new pic featuring stars Charlie Hunnam (“Sons of Anarchy”) and Rinko Kikuchi (“Assault Girls”) wearing their robot-piloting suits. I’m still anxious to see actual footage from this movie. It’s either going to blow me away or make me nostalgic for the ’80s movie “Robot Jox”. (The latter is not necessarily something Del Toro probably wants, by the way.)

The film stars Hunnam and Kikuchi as co-pilots of a giant mechanical robot that is humanity’s last line of defense against a bunch of giant invading monsters. It’s basically a Japanese monster movie on a big ol Hollywood budget. It would be super hilarious of Del Toro eschewed CGI for dudes in plastic monster suits, though. Hilarious, but probably also box office poison.

“Pacific Rim” also stars Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Clifton Collins Jr., Max Martini, Robert Maillet, Burn Gorman, Heather Doerksen, and Larry Joe Campbell.

The battle is scheduled to begin July 12, 2013.

Call me crazy, but I’d pay a dollar to see practical suits in action with CG enhancements and traditional kaiju production techniques. Sure, anyone else and it’d look crack-baby stupid, but del Toro did do amazing things with suits in “Pan’s Labyrinth” and the “Hellboys”

Yeah but no, that’d really look pretty bad. There would be such a limited range of movement with all that crap on the mechs, and the mosters lets, not even go there. If you look at the Hellboys all those practical suits were for human like characters save for Samael and he was on four legs most of the time.

True, wishful curiosity I guess. I’m hoping something about it shows at ComicCon and it gets online quick

dude’s hair needs to stand up straighter. the girl already has some purple tips, so she’s good to go.

Indeed! Can’t be a proper anime mech pilot without spiky hair!

I want to see how big his hands are. Otherwise, how else will he point dramatically to rally the team when shit gets real

In reference to “Robot Jox”, I hope the movie remembers to keep things simple (compared to “RJ” which built a world where war was waged like basically one huge game of “Risk” and presented pilots who were genetically engineered supersoldiers who used Kinect.0 technology to control their ‘bots), except for at least one needlessly long and detailed launch sequence.
