For some reason, when I first heard about David Mamet’s “Redbelt”, I never thought it would be about mixed-martial arts. Not that I didn’t think Mamet could do MMA, because he’s done action/thrillers before, but MMA? Then I stumbled across an L.A. Times article talking about the mixed-martial arts fad that’s currently washing across Hollywood (“Never Back Down” being one of them), and “Redbelt” was mentioned in the article. The story of Mike Terry, a Jiu-jitsu master who has avoided the prize fighting circuit, choosing to instead pursue a life of honor and education by operating a self-defense studio in Los Angeles. Terry’s life is dramatically changed however when he is conned by a cabal of movie stars and promoters. In order to pay off his debts and regain his honor Terry must step into the ring for the first time in his life.
It stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, who kicked plenty of ass in “Serenity”, Rodrigo Santoro (Xerxes from “300”), Tim Allen, Emily Mortimer, and Alice Braga (fresh from “I am Legend”), and is directed by David Mamet.
