“The Last Stand” is notable for a bunch of reasons. First, it marks the English-language debut of Korean director Kim Ji-woon (“A Bittersweet Life”, “I Saw the Devil”, “The Good, The Bad, The Weird”). Second, it sounds like a badass tough as nails crime thriller. And third, it features a little guy you may know as Arnold Schwarzenegger. The former governor of the most populace state in the union, Schwarzenegger was a mainstay of my cinematic youth. His movies influenced my life more than is probably healthy, and flicks like “Commando”, “Predator”, and many others still number among my all time favorites.
Finally, after a prolonged absence, Arnold is back where he belongs, in front of the camera, not behind the big desk pushing around papers. Just because he loves his fans, the Governator posted a new picture from “The Last Stand”. The image shows a grizzled, bloody, beat-all-to-hell Schwarzenegger talking to Forrest Whitaker. That’s what I like to see.
After the leader of a drug cartel busts out of a courthouse, he hauls ass towards the Mexican border. There’s only one thing that stands between him and freedom, between him and escape, and that’s small town sheriff Ray Owen (Schwarzenegger) and his inexperienced crew of young cops. I sense inevitable doom for this drug lord, he’s not match for the Terminator.
“The Last Stand” co-stars Genesis Rodriguez, Luis Guzmán, Peter Stormare, Jaimie Alexander, Rodrigo Santoro, Harry Dean Stanton, Johnny Knoxville, Zach Gilford, John Patrick Amedori, Daniel Henney, and Eduardo Noriega.
Kim is responsible for some of our favorite movies in recent years. His films are grim, violent, psychologically dense thrillers that combine action, crime, and anti-heroes. So many international filmmakers have ventured into Hollywood only to start churning out crap. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Kim bucks that trend and his style and work translate and continue to create incredible films.
Schwarzenegger and company make “The Last Stand” January 18th, 2013.
There are actually two new pics from the movie. Here’s the other one… – Nix
