So apparently Jason Bourne was some kind of mutant X-Men or something created in a lab. Or at least that’s the impression I got from this new theatrical trailer for Tony Gilroy’s “The Bourne Legacy”, which features new Bourne guy Jeremy Renner flying all over the place like he’s a superpowered mutant or something. Plus, the film is definitely not shy about using Jason Bourne as part of its plot, which is both a cheat and a brilliant idea. Matt Damon, who, depending on who you ask, was either not asked back for this installment or decided not to come back, must be fuming right now considering the amount of “screentime” his character gets in the trailer. At the same time, “Legacy” brilliantly sets up for Damon to reprise Bourne in future installments. Overall, this is a nifty trailer for what should prove to be, if nothing else, a slam-bang action picture.
The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.
