A Pirates Movie Without Johnny Depp? Disney Must be Smoking Something…

Featured, Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides (2011) Movie — By Nix on September 28, 2009

It was a done deal for the longest time: Johnny Depp returning as Jack Sparrow in a fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie. Along the way, the movie hit a major speed bump, and all it took was a pink slip. Now there is a chance Johnny Depp might not even end up doing the announced “Pirates 4″ movie, since titled “On Stranger Tides” and set to be directed by Rob Marshall.

The issue for Depp isn’t the money (Disney is willing to pay him just about anything, in all likelihood), but more to do with the recent firing of Depp’s good buddy, Disney suit Dick Cook from the Mouse House. Depp and Dick, it would appear, were this tight, and Depp has publicly expressed a lack of enthusiasm in returning to make Disney oodles and oodles of money after they’ve canned his best bud. Can you say: “Oops”?

It now appears as if Disney has heard the less-than-private rumblings from Depp vis-a-vis the Cook firing, and according to one of Latino Review’s sources, the studio is currently “preparing to replace Captain Jack with a entirely new character if [Depp refuses to come back for a] fifth and sixth film.”

Yeah, right. Disney must be on crack if they think that’s going to work.

Here’s the deal: the last two “Pirates” movies were, to put it bluntly, overlong, convoluted, silly, and resembled Disney rides, but minus the actual riding part. The only thing that kept those movies from being total bores? Yes, you guessed it: Depp and his Sparrow act. Let’s face it, Johnny Depp IS the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

So what do you think? Would you see a “Pirates” movie without Johnny Depp or Captain Jack Sparrow?

Look, Orlando Bloom, a Pirates movie without Jack Sparrow! Let's point and laugh at them!

If they were stupid enough to go through with it, I would end up seeing it but it wouldn’t be enjoyable.

‘ I agree, mostly. Depp and Sparrow are the FACE of the Franchise, and the flagship as well. But Geoffrey Rush’s Captain Barbosa is just as integral if you ask me. After watching the second movie I felt something was missing, and it wasn’t until Barbosa showed up at the end that I relaized he was it. That being said, DEPP IS PIRATES! A movie with JUST Barbosa wouldn’t be fun, just as to me a movie with just Sparrow would be okay but not as great without Barbosa. Give Depp some creative freedom and he’ll come back. He’s probably just scared they may make him reign it in a bit.

It would be a rental for me. If Depp’s not in it, I won’t see it in the theaters.

  • redwildflower says:

Not even a rental for me. I really do hate it when they attempt to continue a franchise without the main ingredient. For me it was bad enough without Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, but now it’s just ridiculous. I would not watch this movie for a second without Depp in it. He is the only reason the Pirates movies lasted as long as they did, they will crash and burn without him.

  • Zool says:

The article has it down right–Depp IS “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Nobody else in the franchise is irreplaceable, even as much as I like them–I would still see the next one with or without Barbossa and I’m actually quite relieved Keira & Orlando are gone because their storyline reached a satisfactory conclusion and a new trilogy needs some fresh blood to play with. But to lose Depp would be a disaster. Giving us a new character will simply not suffice here, and I hope to heaven we do not see any of Jack Sparrow’s relatives showing up in the next film. Okay, I’ll be a little nicer: a distant relative, perhaps, but the last thing I want to see is some moron doing a bad impersonation of Jack and expecting us to think it’s amusing!

    • Dedpool says:

I agree. I don’t think they could do it without him, just saying he wasn’t the only great and in my eyes important thing about the franchise. I also agree about Bloom and Knightley’s story arc being done, and therefore no longer necessary to the storyline. SUre a cameo by either or both would be cool, but definitely not necessary. Only thing necessary is Depp, followed closely by Rush, and then Mr. Gibs (first mate), because he was just fun.

  • Naomi says:

A Pirates Of The Caribbean movie without Johnny Depp? Well that’s blasphemy! Sure I’m ok with Orlando and Keira not being in the movie but no Johnny? I just don’t see POTC without him.

If they go through with it without Johnny I’m sure it’s not going hit it big like the other ones. I for one will NOT be going to the movies if theres no Depp.

I can understand the corprate deiscion about the termination of the long term CEO however if Jonny Depp can’t get past the fact that he will dissapoint all his fans and his reputattion. However I think if we cut Johnny Depp out and brought back eveerybody else and showed a stunt doble getting hung as captian Jack Sparrow I think the franchise can continue.
