A Quick Daredevil Update

“Daredevil” is, hands down, my favorite comic book superhero. I’ve been a fan of “the man without fear” since I was a small child. That said, I had to be physically restrained from leaving the theater when I saw Mark Steven Johnson’s 2003 adaptation of “Daredevil” starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. It was Valentine’s Day, I was on a date, and I still tried to leave five minutes in.

There have been rumors bandied about David Slade’s planned adaptation of the venerable comic franchise, but precious little actual news. The other day, however, Slade dropped a Tweet indicating that a draft of the script, by Brad Caleb Kane (“Fringe”), is indeed finished, and hints at more news to come after New Year’s.

Here’s what the Tweet says:

DD still on track [Brad Caleb Kane] did an amazing job on script with high pressure deadline. We will be doing more work on it. News in N-year.

While there’s little to hang your hat on in this brief message, it’s nice to know that things are progressing. As much as I would love for there to be a good “Daredevil” movie, until there is more to go on, I will remain highly skeptical. While I enjoy some of Slade’s movies—namely “30 Days of Night” and “Hard Candy”, and he did work on “Breaking Bad”—he also directed one of the “Twilight” movies, so we’ll see. There are so many interesting characters and storylines to choose from that there is no reason not to tell an incredible story.

Who would you like to see play Daredevil/Matt Murdock? Any villain preferences, or storylines you’d like to see them explore this time around?

When it comes to finding a lead they need to look more indie star. As for villains would have to be either Typhoid Mary or Gladiator. Or possibly Mr. Fear.

C’mon!! The ben affleck flick wasn’t too bad!!!!…I mean,,,I know i know…this movie was no SIN CITY or DARK KNIGHT or X MEN 2…but c’mon was a lot better than CATWOMAN or ELEKTRA or FANTASTIC FOUR…

I agree. Besides Blade and Blade 2 it was the best of the pre-Ironman/The Dark Knight movies by far. The one problem was that they totally expended all of his major villains in one shot. Kingpin will always be Daredevil’s number one enemy. However, they could go the “Batman Begins” route and do a take on a lesser known foe like Gladiator or Mr. Fear. Neither are as cool as Bullseye but he’s been done too. Same with Typhoid Mary. Bullet or Bushwaker could work too. I say work it like the Nolan Bat movies. Do an origin with a lesser known villain. Have the second film introduce Bullseye and Elektra (with new casting of course) and then finish it with the reveal of the Kingpin and the Enforcers.

Agreed as well! I think Mr. Fear, The Owl, or Mr. Hyde would work, or go completely left field and do the Hand for real. Typhoid in Elektra was about the only well done thing about the film. Sure she was competely different, but it was a VERY good take, and had they thrown in multilpe personalities, it would’ve been perfect. They could have The Kingpin hire her, and she could still be an assassin with the poison/plague kiss, but only in her Typhoid persona. Anyway they definitely should reboot the franchise, I also think going dark is good, but have some of DD’s swashbuckling attitude before stuff gets too dark and then have him react to it.

The Hand storyline would work better as a sequel in my opinion. The problem with Daredevil is that he is so similar to Batman that it may come off as a rip off if done too dark in tone. It should be dark and atmospheric but there will be a lot of comparisons to Nolan’s batverse. Even some of his characters are reflections and twists on Batman characters. The Owl/The Penguin, Mr. Fear/Scarecrow and Phantasm, Mr.Hyde/Two-Face, Elektra/Catwoman and Talia, etc.
I’d say do a reboot with some flashbacks to his origin. Going too origin heavy would be a bit redundant. Have a villain that hasn’t been done before and isn’t too close to any Bat villains. Build on his duplicity and his relathionships between Foggy, Karen Page and maybe even Kingpin set up as a corrupt city planner who is funding Murdock and Nelson’s faultering legal office. At the end of the first film he is helped by Stick. That could set up the second film and The Hand storyline. Bring in Elektra and Typhoid Mary. They could also sprinkle in more of his villains as secondary characters or allusions to them. The Owl could be Fisk’s financier. Gladiator could be mentioned in a flashback as an opponent to Jack Murdock. The could incorporate The Enforcers as Fisk’s muscle or entorage. End the trilogy with Bullseye, Bushwacker and Bullett brought in as mercenaries to kill the man without fear ala the bounty hunters in Empire Strikes Back! Although I’d like to see others like Mr. Fear on screen his persona may be a bit too overdone.

          Here’s my cast:

          Bradley Cooper as Daredevil
          Holt McCallany as Jack Murdock
          T.R. Knight as Foggy Nelson
          Amy Smart as Karen Page
          Tim DeKay as Ben Urich
          Franka Potente as Milla Donovan
          Elsa Pataky as Elektra
          Sam Sheppard as Stick
          Ivanna Millicevic as Typhoid Mary
          Cole Hauser as Bullseye
          John Goodman as Kingpin
          Mike Mglone as Fancy Dan
          James LeGros as Montana
          Kane Hodder as Ox
          Brendan Gleeson as Bullett
          Vin Diesel as Gladiator
          Dolph Lundgren as Bushwacker
          Karl Urban as Mr. Fear
          Steve Buscemi as Stilt-Man
          Eddie Marsan as The Owl
          Jon Hamm as Purple Man

I definitely see the similarities between Batman and DD’s Rogues but with just the slightest spin they’d be wholy different. I mean I see the Two-Face/Mr. Hyde thing but they are nothing alike. I like most of your casting but unless you’re taking Kingpin’s physicality out of the equation completely John Goodman is not a good fit. I’d also say switch out Sam Shepard as stick (just don’t see him doing martial arts) but Eric Roberts would work. Cole Hauser as Bullseye though? I dunno, I’d go with Guy Pearce, who was at one time my choice for Murdock.

          • Juggernaut

I’m basing my pick for Goodman on his performance in Death Sentence. He was brutal and really evil in that movie. As for Shepard he was on my short list behind the ultimate pick to play Stick, David Carradine, who obviously won’t be able to do it Cole Hauser is one of those actors who has all of the right ingredients to be awesome but somehow never got there. His role in Higher Learning alone is enough to gain my vote. I do like Pearce, however he was my pick for Mr. Fantastic in a FF reboot.

  • Shazam!

Since Murdock is such a cerebral character I think they should counter him with a villain who is total opposite – like Mr. Hyde. I really liked the moment in TDK when Alfred helps Bruce to understand that he needs to stop thinking like a rational person – I think they could play a similar angle with DD.

The problem with Ben’s DD is that hes too bulky to be that agile, have no problem with the movie though I still think that was a big DD back then. I hope they make another one again and not hurry things.
