A Younger Q. Returns to the Bond-verse as Ben Whishaw

Ben Whishaw in The Hour TV SeriesHey, they already changed the gender of M., so I suppose making Q., James Bond’s gadget master, younger isn’t such a big deal.

To that end, young Mr. Ben Whishaw (“Brideshead Revisited”, “The Tempest”) has been revealed as Bond’s Q., the man with the plan who shows up usually at the beginning of the film to introduce a new set of wacky (but ultimately very useful) gadgets to our suave spy before he goes out on his missions.

Whishaw supplants the late Desmond Llewelyn, who played the character until his death and was replaced by comedian John Cleese in 2002’s “Die Another Day”.

Q. and his myriad of gadgets have been missing from the franchise after Daniel Craig took over and the producers decided to go a more “gritty”, “Bourne”-esque direction where, apparently, a cranky old dude with wacky gadgets didn’t quite fit in. It’ll be interesting to see how they re-fit Whishaw back into the franchise after taking a break from the character in the last two films.

Whishaw joins Daniel Craig in “Skyfall”, the latest Bond film that also co-stars Bérénice Marlohe, Naomie Harris, Albert Finney, Ralph Fiennes, and Javier Bardem. Judi Dench, of course, returns as M., Bond’s no-nonsense boss. Sam Mendes directs the film, which is scheduled for 2012.
