The original “Cowboys and Aliens” comic book was essentially about warring cowboys and Indians who decide to team up to fight an alien menace that suddenly (and literally) dropped into their midst, intent on enslaving the population. For the movie version, we’ve heard about a lot of cowboy castings (led by Daniel Craig as the lead cowboy), but we haven’t heard much about any Indian casting. That’s changed.
Variety reports that Adam Beach (“Windtalkers”) has joined the cast of Jon Favreau’s “Cowboys and Aliens”. Beach will be playing Nat Colorado, a half-Apache who works for Harrison Ford’s town big man Woodrow Dollarhyde. This is yet another major detour from the original comics, but then again, it certainly seems as if Favreau and screenwriters Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have merely taken the premise of the comics and run with it in an entirely new direction. Having read the comics, I can’t say as if that’s a bad thing.
Also in the cast, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Clancy Brown, and Paul Dano.
The cowboys and aliens are scheduled to whoop it up in the Old West July 29, 2011.
