What does Amber Heard have that Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley doesn’t? Apparently the willingness to go nude onscreen, which, rumor has it, is the main reason why Knightley and Johnasson failed to land the female lead in Johnny Depp’s “The Rum Diary”. Heard is described as a “relative newcomer”, but I swear I’ve seen the girl everywhere. She was recently in “Pineapple Express”, but before that, she was in the MMA movie “Never Back Down”. She also had a brief stint as the object of lust on the TV show Hidden Palms, and there was that horror movie that never made it, “Everybody Loves Mandy Lane”. Basically, the girl has been everywhere but up until now, has never really made it on “the scene”. That might all change with this role in “Rum Diary”.
Diary” will place Heard at the front and center of a love triangle in the tale of a washed-up, hard-drinking journalist named Paul Kemp (Depp) in 1950s Puerto Rico. Heard will play Chenault, the free-spirited girlfriend of a fellow journalist who cheats on him with Kemp, trying to convince him to run away with her.
The role drew strong interest from many a leading lady (Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley were among those reported to have been vying for it), though some had reservations regarding the nudity the role calls for. But that didn’t inhibit Heard — in the upcoming ensemble Bret Easton Ellis adaptation “The Informers,” she spends all but one scene in the flesh. “Diary,” however, also will offer the opportunity to showcase some dramatic chops.
Does it have to be said? “The Informers” has just made it to the very top of my must-see list. Yes, I’m shallow that way. What of it?
