American Gangsters Rule the Box Office

I don’t think it’s a surprise that the Denzel Washington-Russell Crowe crime team-up “American Gangster” took over the box office this weekend, but I think it is surprising that it was so dominant, taking in a whopping $46.3 million in its weekend debut. Coming in second place was the Jerry Seinfeld animation “Bee Movie”, which laid claim to the $39.1 million that “Gangster” couldn’t steal. The only other film opening this week, the John Cusack drama “Martian Child” did just as poorly as everyone expected, bring in $3.65 million in its debut. Again, I have to ask myself — who did John Cusack piss off at the studios that they would release his movie in the same week as “American Gangster” and “Bee Movie”?

Here’s how the rest of the box office broke down over the weekend:

1. “American Gangster,” $46.3 million.

2. “Bee Movie,” $39.1 million.

3. “Saw IV,” $11 million.

4. “Dan in Real Life,” $8.1 million.

5. “30 Days of Night,” $4 million.

6. “The Game Plan,” $3.85 million.

7. “Martian Child,” $3.65 million.

8. “Michael Clayton,” $2.9 million.

9. “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?”, $2.7 million.

10. “Gone Baby Gone,” $2.4 million.
