Guess what? Matthew Lillard directed a movie. Wanna know something else? It looks surprisingly good. I’m not the biggest Matthew Lillard fan on the planet — “SLC Punk”, however, is exceptionally badass — but I must say that his upcoming comedy/drama “Fat Kid Rules the World” has potential. The red band trailer is a little long in the tooth, but it’s certainly worth investigating if you like fat kids and rock music. And who doesn’t?
This synopsis does a much better job of explaining the plot:
Troy Billings is seventeen, overweight, and suicidal. Just as he’s about to jump in front of a bus, he’s saved by Marcus, a charming high school dropout/street musician. The two begin an uneasy friendship when Marcus enlists the musically challenged Troy to become the drummer in a new punk rock band. As Troy’s relationship with Marcus grows, Troy’s father becomes increasingly concerned about his son’s new friendship.
Okay, maybe it doesn’t do a great job of explaining things, but at least you have a better idea of what’s going on. Right? The film is currently screening at SXSW this week. The trailer, meanwhile, awaits.
