And an Upcoming DC Comics Film Will be Directed by…Guillermo Del Toro?????

Helllllloooooooo there

Guillermo Del Toro is no stranger to comic book films, with the “Hellboy” films under his belt, he next will tackle an upcoming DC comic film that will be entitled “Heaven Sent”.  If you haven’t heard of this comic before…it’s because it doesn’t exist.  The upcoming film will feature the characters Deadman, Etrigan the Demon, Hellblazer, Phantom Stranger, Sargon the Sorcerer, The Spectre, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, among others.  Now if those characters seem familiar in this grouping, many are involved in the current “Justice League: Dark” series in DC comics New 52 continuity.

I am torn on this…I love Del Toro’s sensibility…and I give DC props for giving some lesser known characters a shot, but I don’t see this film connecting with audiences.  The comic has neutered John Constantine (worse than the Keanu Reeves ever could), and it’s convoluted plot just doesn’t do the characters justice.  I am hoping that Del Toro can put his touch on these characters and story and make “Heaven Sent” one of the more successful DC comics films out there…if they can get the paranormal and mystical themes to connect with filmgoers.

Justice League: Dark??? The name is even bad!

Now supposedly, this film MAY come out before the proposed “Justice League” film that will compete with “Avengers 2″.  That means this film will arrive either next year or 2014, given the heavy special effects needed for these types of films, I see sometime in 2014.  Are you guys excited about Del Toro returning to comic films?  Should they EVEN make this film??  My opinion is this: DC should focus on making films to set up “Justice League” (Wonder Woman, Flash, etc.), but I have been wrong before.

I just don’t get it. Why not build franchises around their more notable heroes?! I know that they are looking to put all of the big wigs in a JLA film but c’mon! Release a solo Flash movie. Get a Wonder Woman film started. Something. Anything!
These characters may appeal to comic fans and would also have some love from the horror/sci-fi fans but an average, everyday moviegoer will not be interested in my opinion.
Who knows, maybe Del Toro will make Swamp Thing sparkley or give Deadman a bow and arrow on us and every tween in the nation will be lining up around the corner for this! Lol.

I am excited to see what Del Toro does with Swamp Thing…but as a whole….I am a little worried…I want A GOOD Green Lantern movie, a Flash, and a Wonder Woman film…

As I understand it, horror movies make money overseas. Maybe the idea of “supernatural Avengers”, sounds appealing to Warner executives.

Should be done as an animated film then. This is a big gamble and not one you want to throw a lot of money at if there’s a large possibility people won’t see it. That said, keep it streamlined to like 3 characters and a big bad and it could work.

If this movie gets made in live action form, it´s probably going to star Constantine, Zatanna (their street clothes won´t strain the budget) and maybe Deadman. With the Swamp Thing, The Spectre, and Etrigan as cameos.

    Not excited at all.

Plus, Del Toro most likely will walk away from the project after a while.

del Toro needs to do something different. He’s getting a little bit predictable. We’ll see how his mech movie turns out.

I love how everyone forgets that the Mrvel movie run began with Blade at New Line Cinema. It was that movie that made people sit up and say, hey these can be done seriously. Also it shows lesser know titles can work. “Constantine” as off the source as it was still did decently and has a small cult following. Personally I think they should have used James Marsters (Spike from Buffuy, and Angel) as Constatine but I digress. I think this is overly abitous with these characters. An Etrigan movie would rock, so would an updated Swamp Thing, a Spectre, or a Deadman film (show would be better for the latter two) but a film with all of them? Not so sure.

If they picked one or two of the characters that would be awesome…the comic is horrid and I am just afraid that this will fail no matter who helms it. The Blade franchise as a whole not only started the Marvel movie train it also showed darker characters could work. If only other Marvel Knights characters could follow suit
