Anderson Updates Resident Evil 4

Horror Movie News, Resident Evil 4: Afterlife (2010) Movie — By Nix on December 19, 2008

Say what you will about the “Resident Evil” movies, but to me, they’re the perfect example of popcorn entertainment: fast-paced, substance-free, and pretty darn entertaining as long as you know what you’re getting. Sure, every single one of the three previous films could have been better, but you know what? You can pretty much say that about every movie with Paul W.S. Anderson’s name attached to it in some form or another. The guy has always been good, but never great. So yes, I am liking the news that we’ll be getting a “Resident Evil 4″ sometime soon, though Anderson declines to comment on the storyline or whether Claire Redfield (played by Ali Larter in the previous installment) will pick up the mantle from Milla Jovovich’s Alice, or if Alice will continue her zombie fighting ways.

Here is Anderson’s interview with IGN:

“I’m writing a script right now. The script side is happening,” Anderson explained.

“Once again we’re doing it completely with the blessing of [Capcom]. We got a lot of flack [on the sequels] for, ‘Why isn’t the movie set in the mansion just exactly like the very first videogame?’ That’s just not progression for me. As the Resident Evil videogames themselves have developed in leaps and bounds — it’s like when we did the last movie people were like, ‘Resident Evil doesn’t take place in the desert. What the (expletive) is this?’ Well, where does Resident Evil take place? Does it take place in Raccoon City exclusively? Well, I don’t think so because the game has been in Antarctica, in Raccoon City, now it’s in Africa.”

Anderson continued, “The game is constantly and so is the movie franchise. We’re doing it very much in conjunction with the developers of the videogame to give the audience something fresh but something that fits within the world of the videogame.”

The last time we saw Alice in “Resident Evil: Extinction”, she was heading off to do some more Umbrella Corporation smashing, while Claire Redfield was taking some survivors to Alaska. The movie sort of left it wide open as to who the franchise was going to follow next — Alice or Claire? I’m more inclined to go the Claire route, as haven’t we already seen Alice do pretty much everything by now after three movies? What are they going to do to her character next, give her Neo-like superpowers? Okay, so maybe they were already starting in on that road by the end of “Extinction”…

If Anderson is interested in starting fresh, he’ll go with Claire, but if he and Capcom wants to play it safe and ensure that their moneymaker continues to roll, they’ll go back to Alice. And considering Anderson’s history of playing it safe, I’m guessing Alice will be back.

Below: Sure, an ass-kicking hot chick is nice, but an ass-kicking hot chick with a B.F.G. is better.

I LOVE THE MOVIES THEY ARE THE BEST BUT NOTHING BEAT’S RESIDENT EVIL 5 THE GAME COMING OUT MARCH 13TH IN AUS I REKON THEY SHOULD MAKE NUMBER 4 FOR THE MOVIE AND GO WITH THE GAMES GO TO 5

I think they should expand the franchise to follow a different plat, as resident evil 4 did. Do plagas instead of the virus. something like that would reboost the franchise.Plus it can introduce new characters like leon kennedy. woudl help out the movies alot without being redundant!

how can any of you say you love the Alice story line, who the F%$# is Alice and where did she come from. She has nothing to do with the games in fact she is ruining the resident evil name. The movies are good “zombie” movies but are terrible “resident evil” movies for one we haven’t even met Chris yet, and is one of the main characters in the games and to be honest what the hell was wrong with the games stories, you know what was wrong with them nothing, the story from the games would have made great movies, box office hits even. They had so much potential and this is the shit we got. I hope somebody remakes them the way they were intended to be.

I just hope that if Resident Evil 4 is going to have Alice – she wont be like Hancock. LOL.

I think that they are going to go from one to the other, they are both great acts to go by.

Alice-kick ass fighting, kinda never gets old, and claire doesnt do that much action.

Claire-well alice can get kinda old just same stuff over and over, al least this is a semi-new face and would make a nice act.

they both have their positives and negatives, so i think they are ganna keep switching from one to another, than at the end they meet up…

i say do a prequel type movie with chris redfield and barry, and wesker in the mansion.or reboot, because the movies sucked they are nothing like the games they werew not scary at all. they need someone like chris nolan who will real it up a little and make it scary as hell instead of stupid chicks jumping around killing all the monsters.

I’m sorry but Alice should not be in this next movie. Also, it should not be set in Alaska. it seems the director found a fun license to fuck around with and just didnt stop. These movies LOOSELY follow the games. Super powers and the desert nomads really stray away from the real story. I wish for once the movies would be accurate. This next movie needs to be set in Spain please, with Leon killin zombies perhaps?. Just a thought. But nah, we wont see that. we will get Alice matrix kicking eskimo zombies.

I agree with chris about how they need to make the movies scary. I actually mean intentionally scary, not story and acting. I played RE1 when it first came out, when I was just a kid. I had played other “serious” games, but was more into X-Men and crap like that. My first RE experience was at 2 or 3 in the morning with all the lights off. Needless to say it scared the hell out of me… Yet I still came back for more. That was the whole point of the game. It was “Survival Horror”. You were supposed to be afraid. The movies lost the whole point. A main recurring theme in the games is that you have to “escape the horror” At least with RE1 thru 3. I didn’t like how they got rid of Umbrella in RE4, but understood that it was natural progression, and it fit. The movies, are not scary at all… Except maybe the 1st one a little bit. The 2nd and 3rd were just absurd in the sense, that they were so obsessed with making money that they didn’t care how far off the wall the story went. The storyline didn’t make a lot of sense at times, and the progression isn’t something a rational human being would come up with. Instead of making the same movie they’ve already made twice, which wasn’t good the first two times, I might add… They should either reboot, or just stop. The story is cliche, and… The world ended. There were few survivors, and from what Rupaul W Anderson said, the story is supposed to be fresh, but fit in the universe of the videogame. Well, I don’t think ending the world, and introducing an army of clones with supernatural/psychic powers, really fit into that universe. I’m a huge fan of Resident Evil, and I always will be. The people that like the movies and say things about how we’re all retarded for not liking them… I’ll be willing to bet that you’ve never played the games, or are simply incapable of understanding them. Anyone who has played the games from start to finish, will probably share my point of view. Everyone else… a language you’ll understand… Moo. Mooooo. Moo. That’s right. I just said that. (for the mentally handicapped —-You’re cattle—Yes you are.)
