Eon and Sony Pictures need a director to for the untitled “Bond 24”, which they’re probably hoping to get up and running before star Daniel Craig becomes too old to jump from rooftops and bed women half his age. Aw, I’m just messin’ with ya. That’s why there are stunt doubles and actors playing Bond have bedded female co-stars who are way younger than half their age.
But with “Skyfall” director Sam Mendes off to theater land, the producers of the Bond franchise are looking for a replacement, and according to reports, names that the studios are meeting with include Ang Lee, Tom Hooper, Shane Black, David Yates, and Nicolas Winding Refn, who is just taking a bath over at Cannes with his, apparently, very polarizing “Only God Forgives”.
Of those names, I’d love to see Lee direct, since it’s such an out-of-the-box choice, and would fit in with Lee’s M.O., which is directing movie genres he’s never tried his hand at before. Lee, who is coming off the big hit “Life of Pi”, has never really done a full-blown spy/action movie and if he’s proven anything, it’s that Lee really likes doing new things.
Refn would be an intriguing choice, too, but I don’t think the producers are willing to put their billion-dollar franchise in the hands of someone so, er, unpredictable.
I’m guessing Yates and Hooper will probably end up with the gig. They’re the safest choices.
We’ll find out soon enough, I suppose.
Or Mendes will just direct again. Deadline has Mendes and the producers starting “talks” for the director to helm Bond 24 after directing “Skyfall” to $1 billion-plus at the box office. With Mendes possibly back, dare we hope for another finale where Bond fights off the bad guys using “Home Alone”-style trickery?
We dare, we dare.
Or Not. THR doesn’t believe Mendes is returning, quoting unnamed insiders as saying that Mendes’ return is “unlikely”. Take that for what you will.
