Following up on Michael Arndt getting the cushy gig of penning “Star Wars: Episode 7” for Disney, the studio has now locked in two more writers, Lawrence Kasdan (left) and Simon Kinberg for another episode of the space saga. The thing is, no one knows if they’re writing “Star Wars: Episode 8” or “Episode 9” (or hell, even possibly both).
Of the two, the name Lawrence Kasdan should get “Star Wars” fans the most excited, as he was the one responsible for writing “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back”, the second in the series (and fifth in overall franchise chronology). “The Empire Strikes Back” is generally considered (and I completely agree) to be the best in the series. But Kasdan also had a hand in “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi”, generally considered to be a weak entry, so there’s that, too.
Kasdan’s would-be partner, young buck Simon Kinberg is an up and coming screenwriter, with credits on “Sherlock Holmes”, “Jumper”, “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”, and a couple of “X-Men” movies. Teaming him up with Kasdan is an intriguing idea, and I’m somewhat disappointed they’ll only be writing one of the upcoming three installments. Why not just have them write both? Or hell, team up with Arndt for all three? After all, they are essentially doing a new trilogy.
In any case, besides writing one of the two remaining episodes, the duo will also produce.
The first of three new “Star Wars” movies will be arriving in 2015 courtesy of Disney Studios, who recently acquired the series rights from George Lucas, who will remain as a “consultant”.
