Speaking of shocking movie news. If the idea of Stephen Chow starring in and directing “Green Hornet” had me falling out of my chair in shock and surprise, the idea of Darren Aronofsky writing and directing a Robocop remake (or re-imagining, I guess is what they’re calling it) was just so “out there” that I spent most of that day trying to make sure I wasn’t reading some crazy, parallel universe version of the Internet. But nope, it was true. Darren Aronofsky had been given the duty of writing and directing a remake of “Robocop”. Or is he? Nowadays, Aronofsky doesn’t sound so sure about the movie anymore, as it turns out.
Via Joblo, who relates Aronofsky’s phone call to, of all places, the Howard Stern show:
I heard some rumors about a month ago that things might not be going well in the universe of the ROBOCOP remake. Namely that Darren Aronofsky, who was hired this past summer to direct the “reimagining,” was, let’s say, losing interest in the project. Today Aronofsky called in to the Howard Stern Show to promote THE WRESTLER and when asked about ROBOCOP, Aronofsky said that he was working on the script but that he’s “not sure” if it was still going to happen adding “we’ll see…”
I still can’t wrap my head around it. Darren Aronofsky. The guy who did “Pi”, “The Fountain”, and “Requiem for a Dream”. Writing and directing “Robocop”, the movie about a cop who gets shot and turned into a super gun-toting cyborg. I mean, come on, how does something like this happen? Who comes up with this stuff? If it was a movie, I’d call bullshit on it and move on.
Hollywood, I tell ya, strange things happen over there…
Update: 12/22/08 Joblo.com has called bullshit on their own story. Go figure.
