Okay, so maybe he’s not actually mad about not being Mad Max in George Miller’s upcoming “Mad Max 4: Fury Road”, but he is a little shock that he wasn’t even asked about the role by ol Georgie. Being that, you know, Mad Max is Australian, will be shot in Australia, and Sam Worthington is currently Australia’s Golden Boy, it would seem like a natural fit. Not so much, because Miller has since hired British actor Tom Hardy (”Bronson”) to play a younger Mel Gibson in the sequel, set for a 2011 release.
Worthington tells The Telegraph about being passed up for the role:
“Like [fellow Australian actor] Eric (Bana), I’ve never been approached… I would have loved it. From what I’ve heard, it’s going to be amazing… I’m sure (director) George (Miller) has his reasons. He’s obviously got his own ideas about the type of guy he wants.”

I gotta admit, as much as I don’t see Rose McGowan as Red Sonja, the fact that she seems completely gung-ho about making the movie happen come hell or high water sort of makes me want to see it. Surely, if the lead actress is this excited about a movie, it couldn’t be all bad — right? In any case, back in August McGowan tweeted that the movie was delayed, referencing “real life”, but didn’t really say what that meant. Now we know: she had injured herself, enough that it required surgery which is scheduled for later this year.
Says McGowan:
“I need one more arm surgery from nerve damage so I’m supposed to have that the beginning of December so if you see me anywhere I’ll be hobbling around with a cast. It’ll be very pretty. We’re hoping to start filming again in maybe a year.”
The reality is that the chances of a “Red Sonja” movie actually happening probably depends [...]

I hadn’t heard that “Ong Bak” director Pachya Pinkaew was looking to get into the English-language movie scene until I stumbled across this report that the Thai director had signed on with Zero Gravity Management for his beyond-Thailand representation. The short article also mentions that Pinkaew is currently at work prepping his first English-ish language movie, the actioner “White Elephant” with Djimon Hounsou (”Blood Diamonds”).
While “White Elephant” will be Pinkaew’s first foray into making a movie for International audiences (one can reasonably assumed that with a Hollywood actor like Hounsou as the lead, this thing will have plenty of English dialogue, right?), he won’t necessarily have to leave the Thai border to do it. The plot has Housou playing an assassin who is hired by a businessman to avenge the murder of his daughter by white slave traders in Thailand.
“White Elephant” commences production in March on location in Bangkok.

With a fourth “Underworld” entry already greenlit by the studio, the biggest question on everyone’s mind (or at least, everyone who thinks werewolves and vampires fighting in a gothic setting with dark-blue scenery is awesome, anyway) is whether either of the franchise’s two British heroines will return in the leading role. Will it be Kate Beckinsale once again, as rumored, or her replacement Rhona Mitra? According to this latest report, it might be neither. Or possibly both. Okay, so I made the last part up, but one can dream, can’t one?
What is a sure thing, though, is that a writer has been assigned to pen the fourth movie in former “The Shield” scribe John Hlavin. The writer has confirmed that “Underworld 4″ will not be a prequel like the previous entry, and he added this:
“It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don’t want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to [...]

I suppose that makes some kind of sense. Or as much sense as the movie could possibly make, I suppose, given its premise and what previously happened to one of the characters in the original. Thanks to reader ivica and the Dolph Ultimate fansite for the poster and DVD details.
When a team of former Soviet radicals seizes Chernobyl and threatens to unleash a lethal cloud of radioactive gas one hundred times deadlier than Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined, the US military brings in a bio-mechanically enhanced super soldier, Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme), to foil the plot. As Deveraux fights his way into the plant, he faces off with his now revived former nemesis, Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren), and a newly ‘updated’ Next Generation Unisol (former UFC Heavyweight Champion [...]

It used to be that I thought Gerard Butler was attaching himself to way too many movies for his own good, and I made fun of him for it. Well guess what? Compared to Sam Worthington, Gerard Butler was an amateur. A scant day after Worthington was attached to the sci-fi “The Last Days of American Crime”, he’s now being rumored to be taking part in another movie — the based-on-true crime film “The Texas Killing Fields” with Bradley Cooper, who is himself on quite the roll after the mega success of “The Hangover”.
Apparently the film gained notoriety when Danny Boyle mentioned it earlier this year as one of the scripts he was considering post-”Slumdog Millionaire”, but according to Boyle, the script was so dark and so fantastic that it would never get made unless you got together “half a dozen super megastars” for the studio to even consider footing the bill.
Says Pajiba:

Granted, the perfect timing for this post would have been yesterday, but hey, better late than never, right? In case you were still wondering what the movie is about, or if you should go see it, here’s a question: Do you like epic battle scenes? If the answer is Yes, then you should go see it. The film is a bit long, even at its current edited length of 2 hrs. 28 minutes. Trust me, that’s about 1 hour and 30 minutes shorter than the original Asian version, which clocked in at over 4 hours. Check out some battle scene clips from the movie below. Also added, the English trailer.
The film stars Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengyi, Chang Chen, Shido Nakamura, and is directed by John Wo. It’s [...]

Former “8 Mile” star Brittany Murphy has been cast as the female lead in Matthew Parkhill’s horror/thriller “The Caller”, the premise of which sounds a tad sci-fi to me, or at least, a little “Twilight Zone”-ish. She joins a cast that already includes “True Blood” star Stephen Moyer and Luiz Guzman.
The film sees Murphy playing a troubled divorcee named Mary Kee, who begins receiving strange telephone calls from a mystery caller that she soon realizes is calling her from the past. This, apparently, leads Mary to believe that she must kill the caller in order to save herself. I haven’t a clue what that means, but I suspect that isn’t the film’s big twist, since, well, it’s already been revealed, hasn’t it?

According to the folks at online movie ticket vendor Fandango, advance ticket sales numbers for “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” has easily beat out every movie in the company’s 10-year history, including “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and “Stars Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith.” The film is also MovieTickets.com’s bestselling pre-sold title in its history. All that is leading industry insiders to predict something in the range of an $85 million opening weekend for Summit’s tale of lovelorn High School girls and their vampire/werewolf crushes. My own guess? Somewhere closer to $100 million.
To capitalize on the Chris Weitz-directed “New Moon”, Summit will be re-releasing the first “Twilight” (which has grossed over $380 million worldwide) back into 2,057 theaters on Thursday. Yen may have been mired in some really awful vanity projects in his early Hong Kong film career, but he’s on a major streak of box office success (both domestically and internationally) in recent years, putting out some really good action projects like “Sha Po Lang” (or “Killzone” as it’s known internationally) and “Flash Point”. His latest was the period actioner “Ip Man”, another movie about a Chinese man battling Japanese occupation in China. Following “Ip Man”, Yen is set to star in “Chen Zhen”, where he will once again tangle with those Imperialist bastards.
In “Chen Zhen”, Yen will play a local resistance fighter in 1920s Shanghai. His character is believed dead after a bloody skirmish, only to resurface seven years later, just in time to uncover a plot involving the Chinese triads and the Japanese. Word was, John Woo was coming onboard to direct the film, but that was over a year ago. According to Woo, who is currently in the States promoting his “Red Cliff” martial arts epic, the time was never right for him to direct the movie, and from the sounds of it, it doesn’t look like he’ll be going anywhere near anything that can be called a “superhero movie” in the future.
Curiously, Woo cites his aversion to superhero movies being their general lack of believability, that he prefers to do movies that are more “realistic”. Which begs the question: how realistic were any of John’s Hong Kong movies? You had one guy with two guns running around shooting about 200 bad guys in one locale.
If the last “Daybreakers” poster wasn’t “Matrix”-y looking enough for you, the new quad poster from across the pond tries to re-enforce the point home. And oh yeah, it also apparently has a little dash of “28 Days Later” in it, although from what I’ve seen, including the recent new faux PSA TV spot for the movie, it doesn’t look anything at all like “28 Days Later”. But hey, some guy from Variety says it is, so who am I to disagree? “Daybreakers” finally show up on January 8, 2010. Starring Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill, Isabel Lucas, Vince Colosimo, Jay Laga’aia, Claudia Karvan, Christopher Kirby, Michael Dorman, Mungo McKay, Emma Randall, and directed by the brothers Spierig.

I’ve read a lot of Warren Ellis’ comic book work, but I’ve never read his “Global Frequency”. Initially I thought this was the comic series “Planetary”, but apparently they are two separate works. In “Frequency”, a woman name Miranda Zero leads a covert unit made up of exactly 1,001 operatives around the world, and their mission is to stop world-threatening situations before the public knows about it. Ellis apparently fashioned the series as a series of single, stand-alone issues, much like a TV show. Warner Bros. tried to adapt the comic into a TV series back in 2005, when the channel was still called WB. Fast-forward to 2009, and the WB is now the CW, and they’re once again looking at a “Global Frequency” series.
MTV reports that Warren Ellis has all but confirmed the second attempt at a “Global Frequency” TV series, posting:
I haven’t been cleared to comment yet, so I can’t really add anything to this. I’ve spoken briefly [...]

I guess it’s true what they say: you do learn something new everyday. For instance, I didn’t know former “Rome” star Kevin McKidd was the voice of Soap MacTavish in the “Modern Warfare 2″ game. Go figure. In any case, speaking to the New York Post, McKidd, who can currently be seen trolling the hallways of “Grey’s Anatomy” for nurse tail, updates the paper on two (possible) upcoming projects: a “Rome” feature film and a possible movie based on the “Modern Warfare 2″ game, which is currently enjoying record-breaking sales worldwide as I type this.
About a possible “Rome” movie:
“There is a script that is being shopped and it’s supposedly very good, I haven’t seen it, but I am definitely going to be a part of the movie,” Kevin told PopWrap. He then went on to say that his character, soldier/politician Lucius Vorenus, is not dead despite what happened in the show. “He very much alive, so that should be a [...]

With Rachel McAdams having already denied rumors that she was talking to producers of “Spider-Man 4″ to play Felicia Hardy aka The Black Cat in Sam Raimi’s latest Spidey film, the question remains: is the Black Cat really going to be in the movie, and if so, who will play her? According to the blokes at UGO, “Bourne” actress Julia Stiles is now “talking” with producers about the role. UGO doesn’t really say who they learned this little news from, just that they “have learned”, which, er, could be totally bullshit, and probably is.
So would Julia Stiles fit the role of the Black Cat? Eh, I don’t know. Stiles’ biggest role to date was that dancing movie “Save the Last Dance”. She’s been in a ton of movies, usually playing teenagers or 20-something characters, and has never really gotten her due, mostly because, well, though she’s a decent enough actress, she’s never really wowed anyone. Even though she’s been in [...]

So yeah, apparently Universal is still moving forward with its plans to make a big-screen movie about the famous 47 Ronin of Japan, to be called, of course, “47 Ronin”. The idea of Hollywood doing a Samurai movie is strange enough, but it’s been known for a while now that Universal is in talks with Keanu Reeves to star. Yes, Keanu Reeves. He of the wooden acting talent and the “I know kung fu” fame. Now word from the trades is that Carl Rinsch has come onboard to direct the movie.
Who is Carl Rinsch? You probably have never heard of him. He’s a commercial director who was recently involved in Ridley Scott’s “Alien” prequel for Fox, before the studio balked at anyone other than Scott directing the movie. Rinsch has been out of a job since, but appears to have now landed on his feet.
“47 Ronin” is currently being written by Chris Morgan (”The Fast & Furious”), and chronicles the [...]

David Fincher’s 1999 movie “Fight Club” is probably the least understood and least appreciated movies from the late ’90s. It’s a gem of a movie, and I loved the hell out of it when I first saw it in theaters. It was thrilling, it was new, it was insanely clever, and it made me really pay attention, even more so after the final credits had rolled. I still love it now, even after I already know all the secrets. If you’ve never seen “Fight Club”, you’re missing out big time. But have no fear: just in time for the film’s 10th anniversary, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is releasing the film on Blu-ray November 17. Hey, that’s today! Check out the cover art and specs for the Blu-ray release below.
A lonely, isolated thirty-something young professional in an unidentified, semi-stylized city, seeks an escape from his ordinary life with the help of a devious soap salesman. They find their release [...]

See, this is why we don’t “break” movie news on the site — it sucks when you’re wrong and your fellow movie bloggers come down on you like hungry little vultures looking for a piece of meat. That, and no one ever sends me anything worth breaking. Ahem. Anyways, remember that news that had Rachel McAdams meeting with the Spidey producers for the role of the Black Cat in “Spider-Man 4″? Apparently all untrue.
McAdams tells EW:
“That’s a total rumor, I have to say. I was hanging out in Toronto the other day and someone came up to me and said, ‘I just heard you’re doing Spider-Man 4.‘ And I said, ‘Really? No one told me!’ It’s not true.”
EW then reached out to Sony, who confirms the totally made up Internet rumor.
Oh well. McAdams as the Black Cat would have been an odd choice anyway (like I said, she just doesn’t seem the “type” for such a role), but [...]
