Who says you can’t have Christmas in November? Not Jim Carrey and director Robert Zemeckis. The duo’s CG take on the timeless “A Christmas Carol” took the top spot at the box office in its debut, knocking last week’s champ, Michael Jackson’s “This is it” of its perch to second place. “Carol” took in $31 million in its debut, good enough for first place, but not quite as spectacular as expected, given the film’s whopping $200 million budget. “This is It”, which is composed entirely of rehearsal footage starring the late Michael Jackson as he prepared for his would-be comeback concert tour, managed to hold onto second place with another $14 million, giving it a two-week domestic total of $57.8 million. The film continues to perform well overseas, already collecting $186.5 million in worldwide tickets.
Besides “A Christmas Carol”, there were four other new films at a crowded box office, with the George Clooney military satire “The Men Who Stare at [...]

If by “awesome” you mean, “Whoa, is this some kind of parody of Hollywood movie trailers?” While watching the trailer for Corey Haim’s “American Sunset”, some kind of crime thriller about a kidnapped wife and a mysterious kidnapper, I kept having flashbacks to comedian Pablo Francisco, who features the “voice of the movie trailer guy” in his act. (Check out the comparisons below). Honestly, this trailer is cut almost exactly as if it was a parody, complete with ridiculous lines from Haim in-between the overly earnest movie trailer guy’s voiceover.
“American Sunset” is a story about love and sacrifice. It’s an edge-of-your-seat shocking thriller about how one ordinary man traveled to hell and back to save his wife.
A shocking thriller, with a Usual Suspects–style twist, “American Sunset” will have both moviegoers and crime solvers alike anxiously waiting for clues to this mystery’s riddle; each time wondering if it will not be too late.
On a trip back to Canada, Tom Marlow wakes [...]

The biggest complaint I heard from guys about “Jennifer’s Body” was that it was Rated R, but it didn’t really make good use of the rating. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has either rectified that, or plans to convince you they have by releasing an Unrated Version of the movie on DVD and Blu-ray December 29. DVD cover art and specs below. Some of the special features include your usual assortment of deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and audio commentaries by director Karyn Kusama and writer Diablo Cody.
Sexy temptress Megan Fox is hotter than hell as Jennifer, a gorgeous, seductive cheerleader who takes evil to a whole new level after she’s possessed by a sinister demon. Steamy action and gore galore ensue as the male student body succumbs to Jennifer’s insatiable appetite for human flesh. Now it’s up to her best friend (Amanda Seyfried) to stop Jennifer’s reign of terror before it’s too late!

Until then, here are even more new images from the movie. Meanwhile, Sherlock Holmes fans will have to wait a little bit longer, December 25, for Guy Ritchie’s “dynamic” interpretation of the world’s greatest Detective to hit multiplexes. Hopefully by then the lobbies of theaters everywhere will be a little quieter.

Wait, didn’t Snoop Dogg already did something similar? Anyways, not content to wow the world with his amazing ability to recite lines about the crack whoreness of his mom and prone-to-bitchiness wife, rapper Eminem will return to the big screen in the 3D film “Shady Talez”. That’s pronounced “Shady Tales“, you see, the “z” in place of the “s” is just to make it look cooler. Because Eminem knows from coolness. So moving on.
The film will be Eminem’s first in over seven years, since his debut in 2002’s “8 Miles”, a movie where Eminem played a white trash kid from Detroit who dreams of becoming a big rapper, but no one gave him a chance, and still our white trash kid kept plugging until respect was given. Word! It was a stretch, we know, but that’s just how talented Slim Shady is.
The 3D “Shady Talez” is being written by Kevin Grevioux (”Underworld”) and Dallas Jackson, and will be in [...]

As mentioned last month, J.J. Abrams is returning to the TV spy game with a new TV show, but we didn’t know the title of his husband-and-wife spy show then. Now we do: it’s going to be called “Undercovers”, which I suppose is a decent enough title. I guess. Hey, he’s J.J. Abrams, if he thinks that’s a cool title, I guess it is. In any case, the other big news is that Abrams is directing the pilot for NBC.
Described as a cross between “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and (of course) “The Bourne Identity” (seriously, someone please make another great action movie so I can stop hearing how this movie or that TV show is “like ‘The Bourne Identity’”), “Undercovers” will be Abrams’ first pilot since 2004’s “Lost” pilot.
Japanese director Hideo Nakata is most famous for directing the original versions of the “Ring” movies, or “Ringu” as its known overseas. He loved directing ghost ladies who climb out of TV’s so much, he returned to the franchise in 2005 to direct the sequel to the American version starring Naomi Watts. (And, I suppose, the nice paycheck didn’t hurt, either.) With “Ring” still apparently popular (though I suppose that’s open to debate), Nakata is currently attached to direct the third entry, which is scheduled for 2011. Before that, though, Nakata is helming “Voice from the Stone” for Zanuck Independent.
Based on an Italian novel of the same name, “Voice From the Stone” was adapted by Mark Wheaton, and tells the story of a female child psychologist who takes on the case of a young boy. Nothing creepy there, right? Not so fast, my friends. You see, the hook is that the boy has made a promise to his dying mother [...]

Nicolas Cage does, on average, 4 movies a year, and he’s usually got 4 more in the pipeline. You can usually count on 3 of the 4 ranging in quality from Godawful to “meh”, with one being slightly less awful; and in some cases, that one movie might even good. As it turns out, there’s a reason Nicolas Cage spends so much time on movie sets, and no, it’s not because hanging out with dirty hippies turned lowly grips is fun, though I suppose that’s a possibility as well. It could very well be that our main Nic Cage has something of a spending problem, and the pay, even for a crappy film, is too good to pass up. After all, those shrunken heads collection don’t collect themselves, you know.
The Daily Beast has a great article detailing Nic Cage’s spending spree over the years and his current financial situation. In a word: he’s broke. After reading the article, you don’t [...]

Basically, it’s ass shots of the four main characters in their full costume get-up getting ready for battle. Or going to a Halloween party. Hey, what do I know what they do when they’re not out fighting crime?
Dave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who one day decides to become a super-hero, even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so.
Starring Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson, Mark Strong, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz, Xander Berkeley, Omari Hardwick, Tamer Hassan, Clark Duke, Lyndsy Fonseca, and directed by Matthew Vaughn.

So what’s so noteworthy about Todd Lincoln new horror movie? Um, not the premise. That sounds pretty generic. There’s no real big names attached, so that probably means a quick direct-to-DVD delivery. But it’s kinda noteworthy because it’s set to star Ashley Greene, who plays vampire Alice Cullen in the “Twilight” movies, and hopefully this is a good excuse to nab some of those “Twilight” fans trolling the Internet for “Twilight” news. Hey, you think I’ve written “Twilight” enough times? “Twilight”. Ahem.
So, the Ashley Greene news. The actress is currently in negotiations to star in a new supernatural horror movie called “The Apparition”. Greene will play the female half of a couple who are haunted by a supernatural presence that is unleashed during a college experiment. Now when they say “experiment” I’m guessing they don’t mean what we think of when we say “college experiment”, if you know what I mean. The film, described as being in the vein of trippy David Fincher films “Fight Club” and “The Game”, will be directed by Neil Burger of “The Illusionist” fame, and will be based on the book by Alan Glynn, with big-screen adaptation courtesy of Leslie Dixon.
Upon discovering the super drug, Cooper’s writer character experiences sudden financial and social success thanks to his new big brain, but soon discovers that the drug has lethal and lasting side effects, as they surely must. One of these side effects involve “trip-switching,” a phenomenon in which time moves with a stop-motion quality, which will no doubt be revealed onscreen in all manner of groovy visuals. You have been warned. The film stars Casey Affleck as a small town Texas lawman who decides to shack up with a prostitute played by Jessica Alba, while keeping Kate Hudson on the side. Nice gig if you can get it. Meanwhile, our soft-spoken lawman starts to slowly slip down the homicidal slope, and it’s up to Simon Baker to stop him. Again, the video reveals quite a bit, so steer clear unless you absolutely need to watch it.

Overture Films just sent over a new image from their upcoming remake of “The Crazies”. It features Radha Mitchell in a position I’ve often thought about.
Imagine living in a small town where everything is safe and happy…until suddenly it isn’t. Imagine your friends and neighbors going quickly and horrifically insane. In a terrifying tale of the “American Dream” gone horribly wrong, four friends find themselves trapped in their hometown in The Crazies, a reinvention of the George Romero classic directed by Breck Eisner from a screenplay by Ray Wright (Pulse, Case 39) and Scott Kosar (The Amityville Horror, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre).
David Dutten (Timothy Olyphant) is sheriff of Ogden Marsh, a picture-perfect American town with happy, law-abiding citizens. But one night, one of them comes to a school baseball game with a loaded shotgun, ready to kill. Another man burns down his own house…after locking his wife and young son in a closet inside.
If you’re like me, you spend nights wondering what former “T2″ star Edward Furlong and “American Pie’s” Shannon Elizabeth are up to. Okay, if you’re like me, you’re probably just wondering what Shannon Elizabeth is up to, and if she’s still single. The answer: they’re busy co-starring in a remake of the 1988 horror movie “Night of the Demons”, the trailer for which have landed online. Take a look, and wonder no more about what has become of Furlong and Elizabeth. (Though if you’re like me, you’ll probably still continue to wonder about Elizabeth, being that she’s, you know, hot and whatnot.)
Maddie Curtis and her friends Lilly and Suzanne are ready for a great Halloween night. Theyre going to a party thrown by their friend Angela at the notorious Broussard Mansion in New Orleans. Over eighty years ago, six people disappeared from the mansion without a trace and the owner, Evangeline Broussard, hung herself.
The dark history only serves to enhance [...]

Wanna know what “Prison Break’s” Wentwork Miller will look like in the upcoming “Resident Evil: Afterlife”? Well, he really doesn’t look all that different from his stint on “Prison Break”, but it looks like he did get a nice machete. STYD has your first look at the set of Paul W.S. Anderson’s latest “Resident Evil” movie, which returns franchise star Milla Jovovich as Alice and Ali Larter as Claire Redfield. Wentworth Miller joins the cast as Chris Redfield, Claire’s brother. The fourth entry in the never-say-die zombie series is currently shooting (onboard a tanker, it appears) in Toronto, Canada. Screen Gems will release the movie in 3-D next August.

According to comic book movie go-to guy David Goyer, who right now is busy shepherding the show “FlashForward” on TV, and who has just been handed the reins to the “Ghost Rider” franchise, his take on the guy with the flaming skull won’t necessarily be a reboot of the series. That seems to make sense, considering that the franchise only just started 2 years earlier. It will, however, continue on with business as if you’ve never seen the 2007 version or, indeed, need to know anything about the first movie to “get” his sequel.
Goyer tells MTV:
“It’s not exactly a reboot. I hate to say it’s more realistic, because he’s got a flaming skull for a head, but it’s a bit more stripped down and darker. It’s definitely changing tone. What ‘Casino Royale’ was to the Bond movies, hopefully this will be to ‘Ghost Rider.’”
Awesome. I’ve always wondered what Ghost Rider leaping across rooftops parkour-style would look like. We’re gonna [...]

Here’s your first look at a heavily photoshopped teaser poster for the upcoming Josh Harnett post-apocalyptic actioner “Gunslinger”. Yeah, it’s basically a poster for the John Woo videogame “Stranglehold” with Josh Harnett’s face photoshopped over Chow Yun Fat’s, and some gun-toting guys on snowmobiles added in because, apparently, there’s gonna be lots and lots of snowmobiling combat in this movie. Via the boys at Quiet Earth.
In 2012 the world economy collapses.
In 2014 all first world governments crumble.
In 2015 the power and lights go out.
2018, Wisconsin, USA. Communities live in fear, protected by paid gunmen. We cut to Jake (former engineer) now hunting for food to feed his family. He sees smoke in the distance and realises that it is his home. A gang, led by the psychopath Brody, has attacked and murdered his family.
Seeking revenge, he enlists his ex-military brother ‘Sev’ (Josh Hartnett) to track and hunt the killers.

For a guy whose funding is supposed to have dried up, Uwe Boll is still making a hell of a lot of movies nowadays. His latest is “Darfur”, which looks a lot like a serious attempt at getting some respect. The trailer has shown up online, and you can judge for yourself if it’s just a cheaper version of the Bruce Willis actioner “Tears of the Sun” or if this is something that will change your mind about Uwe Boll. Of course, it probably doesn’t help too much that the whole thing starts off looking like a somber documentary about the Darfur genocide before devolving into generic gunplay towards the end. And the presence of Billy Zane, Edward Furlong, and familiar Uwe Boll muse Kristanna Loken probably doesn’t help, either.
American journalists in Sudan are confronted with the dilemma of whether to return home to report on the atrocities they have seen, or to stay behind and help some of the [...]

You can’t blame the Thais for continuing to produce action movies like “Raging Phoenix”. There are basically only two genres coming out of Thailand that sells nowadays – martial arts movies and horror films. Everything else just doesn’t translate very well. One of the industry’s newest import is female ass kicking wonder Jeeja Yanin, who burst onto the scene last year with “Chocolate”, directed by “Ong Bak” head honcho Prachya Pinkaew. The film benefited greatly from Yanin’s unassuming features. For “Raging Phoenix”, we already know the deal, so director Rashane Limtrakul and action choreographer Panna Rittikrai (another “Ong Bak” vet) had to throw us a twist – a new form of martial arts that combines Muay Thai with breakdancing. Or at least, that’s the idea.
The plot for “Raging Phoenix” is as superfluous as they come – neglected rich girl Deu (Yanin) spends her time playing (badly, I might add) drums for a pop band, when she’s nearly abducted one day [...]

Apple has the second trailer for Steve Carel’s CG movie “Despicable Me”, in which Carel plays Gru, an evil supervillain who delights in terrorizing kids with balloon animals and other despicable-ish stuff. But there’s one problem: as evil as he is, Gru isn’t the most evil supervillain out there. That title belongs to Vector (Jason Segel), Gru’s archnemesis. Check out the second trailer for the movie. It’s not gut-busting funny, but seems like a good enough time at the movies.
In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon (Yes, the moon!) in Universal’s new 3-D CGI feature, Despicable Me. Gru delights in [...]
