Last year two films were the main contenders at the Hong Kong Film Awards: “Tau Ming Chong” (“Warlords”) and “Moon To” (“Protégé”). The former, which earned 13 nominations, is an epic scale, often surprisingly violent period film about three blood brothers. The latter, which earned 14 nominations, is a modern crime drama. Both star the very prolific Andy Lau. “Warlords” ended up being the big winner of the night with eight awards, including best cinematography, costume design, director (Peter Chan), art direction, sound design, visual effects, actor (Jet Li), and picture.
“Protégé” garnered just two, including best film editing and supporting actor (Lau). Even though these are very different films both deal with issues of love, loyalty, and power. I got caught up in the Hong Kong Film Award buzz last year and bought an import copy of “Warlords.” At the time, I wasn’t as lucky to find an import of “Protégé.” Dragon Dynasty has remedied that availability problem, and [...]

The press information for “Ninjas Vs Zombies” explains the concept and strategy behind this indie horror film. Screenwriter and director Justin Timpane “spent an afternoon in a Blockbuster looking for ‘the film they haven’t made yet.’ … By studying the small but fierce fanbases of Joss Whedon and Kevin Smith, we realized that a smartly told, violent but funny, surprising film with (and this is important) a high ‘quotability’ factor would elevate the film beyond that impulse rental to the ‘you have to see this’ status.”
The information goes on to say that their second strategy was to create a “human interest story.” They cite “El Mariachi,” “Clerks,” “Blair Witch,” and “Evil Dead” as examples of this. I’ve quoted these passages to highlight the main problem with “Ninjas Vs Zombies” – it seems too calculated and formulaic. Rather than reflect the screenwriter’s authentic voice, it tries very hard to ape the voice of others – Smith in particular. In the [...]

Time magazine listed Alan Moore’s graphic novel “Watchmen” as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present, and called it “a work of ruthless psychological realism. It’s a landmark in the graphic novel medium. It would be a masterpiece in any.” And this publication isn’t alone. Numerous critics have hailed it as “peerless” and “brilliant.” It probably isn’t too surprising then that “Watchmen,” which was released by DC Comics between 1986 and 1987 in 12 installments, soon attracted Hollywood’s attention.
Terry Gilliam was probably the first to publicly declare his interest in bringing it to a movie theater near you, and the director maintained that interest until just a few years ago. Other names have been attached to the project, including Darren Aronofsky, Paul Greengrass, and even Michael Bay. Actors, too, became attached and when nothing came to fruition they pursued other interests. Some of the many rumored actors “in talks” for “Watchmen” include Simon Pegg, [...]

When compiling a Best of Film list, it’s always difficult to remember the ones that came at the beginning of the year. Learning from past mistakes, I kept a list of every film I saw in 2008, noting the ones that had an impact. All of the ones listed are either four or five star films, and are in no particular order. Since the Oscars are quickly approaching – tune in Feb. 22 – I indicated which ones were nominees.

“Cloverfield”
– A genuine “experience” film about New York City under attack. J.J. Abrams conceived of this after a trip to Japan, and it was his attempt at an American “Gojira.” It worked for me. I recently rewatched it on DVD, and even though I knew what was going to happen, I still enjoyed it. My experience was enhanced by watching the DVD extras.

“Iron Man”
– The only summer blockbuster that delivered. Excellent special effects, delirious action sequences, and [...]

Joel and Ethan Coen make comedies with a body count, and “Burn After Reading” is no exception. It starts off with the demotion of Osborne Cox (John Malkovich), an unpleasant f-word spewing and irascible CIA agent. Instead of suffering the demotion, he quits his job, telling Katie, his cold British wife (Tilda Swinton), that he’ll work out of the house as a consultant and spend his free time crafting his memoirs. Since she’s already having an affair with Harry Pfarrer (George Clooney), a gold-chain wearing lothario in the Treasury Department, she decides to get a divorce and hook up with Harry. (Harry, however, is already married to a famous children’s author who herself is stepping out on him.) Katie’s lawyer tells her that before she does anything further, she needs to get him copies of their financial statements. She downloads Osborne’s files onto a CD-Rom, and gives it to his secretary. She, for some reason, takes a bag filled with [...]

Being abnormally obsessed with Asian horror, about a year ago, on a whim, I bought “Into the Mirror” (“Geoul sokeuro,” 2003) through eBay. Written and directed by Sung-ho Kim, the film focuses on Woo Yeong-min (Ji-tae Yu of “Oldboy” fame), a traumatized former police officer who now works as a security guard in his uncle’s soon-to-open department store. The building, though, is plagued with problems, most notably homicidal mirrors. If this scenario sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because the South Korean film has been, surprise, surprise, remade by Hollywood. Now titled “Mirrors,” the film retains a few of the basic elements of its predecessor, but is vastly different.
The protagonist of “Mirrors” is Ben Carson (Kiefer Sutherland), a NYPD officer who has been suspended from the force for shooting someone. Even though his estranged wife Amy Carson (Paula Patton) appears to be a medical examiner (in New York the chief M.E. makes $160,000 a year) and Carson is drawing a pension, [...]

As a rule, I avoid comedies like the plague. Either they are too low-brow for my tastes, relying on flatulence or gross sexual situations for laughs, or they cannot sustain their humor. Comedies also tend to be dominated by flavor-of-the-month performers, usually someone who was on “Saturday Night Live,” who churn out one film after another until they’ve saturated the market. Just a few of the offenders include Will Ferrell, Mike Myers, Owen Wilson, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, and Ben Stiller. Despite my aversion to Stiller, I have seen a fair number of his films. Not because of him, though. He just happened to be in the cast. This is the same reason, I saw “Tropic Thunder.” Stiller may have co-written it, directed it, and starred in it, but for me the draw was Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. Early buzz, too, has been favorable, with “Newsweek,” “E!” and “Rolling Stone” hailing it as this summer’s funniest comedy.

All I want to know is what did writer-producer Clive Barker and/or director Ryuhei Kitamura do or say to someone at Lion’s Gate to get their $15 million film “Midnight Meat Train” dumped into second-run cinemas on its opening week? Did they kidnap an executive’s family and set everyone on fire in front of him? Did they force him to watch “Captivity” and “BloodRayne” on a 48-hour loop? They must have done something pretty wicked, because based on the high quality of “Midnight Meat Train,” their film didn’t deserve this kind of treatment.
Based on a short story by Barker, the film centers on a New York-based photographer, Leon Kauffman (Bradley Cooper), who wants more from his career. Because he hasn’t done anything other than bemoan his situation, his girlfriend Maya (Leslie Bibb) takes matters into her own hands, getting him an “audience” with a snooty art gallery owner, Susan Hoff (Brooke Shields), who tells Leon that his work misses the [...]

The general rule is that the more sequels a film spawns, the crappier they are. Take “The Mummy” (1999). It had a cheesy B-film feel to it with an Indiana Jones vibe. Set in Egypt, it contained some romance, laughs and high adventure. It was entertaining summer fare that introduced us to Oded Fehr. (Yowza.) Not wanting to tamper with a sure thing, writer/director Stephen Sommers reteamed Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) and had them, again, combating Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), the mummy who refused to stay dead in the aptly titled “Mummy Returns.” Taking the romance a bit further, this story finds Rick and Evie as husband and wife, and parents to a pre-teen named Alex (Freddie Boath). Still keeping the ladies happy, the film brought back Fehr and added eye candy wrestler-cum-actor Dwayne Johnson as Mathayus the Scorpion King. I wouldn’t say that “Mummy Returns” was bad, per se, it just wasn’t “The Mummy.” For me [...]

Let’s call it synchronicity. Last week, I was looking through the new DVD releases on Netflix, and I came across “The Tattooist,” a supernatural horror film about an American tattooist (Jason Behr) who, after swiping an ancient Samoan tattooing tool unleashes an avenging “evil” spirit. Being a connoisseur of supernatural horror, I considered adding it to my queue but hesitated. After all, most low budget supernatural horror films are poorly written and acted. Many flat out stink. Not willing to take the risk, I sent myself a note, saying “Hmmm.” Earlier this week, I was looking at the new releases wall at Hollywood Video, and a DVD box caught my eye – there it was again “The Tattooist.” I still didn’t rent it. A few days ago, a Netflix friend sent me a note about, you got it, “The Tattooist.” He enjoyed it, and said I would too. Giving in, I ordered the DVD, and watched it today. I loved [...]

“Mongol” was nominated for a 2007 Academy Award, but it only just started making the festival rounds earlier this year, beginning at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and most recently screening at the Wisconsin Film Festival. Its limited cinematic release began on June 6, and since I live dead center of the United States, it took another month to hit my city. Why it is being handled in such a manner is beyond me, because “Mongol” is a masterful five-star effort.
Co-written and directed by Sergei Bodrov, “Mongol” is the supposed first part of a trilogy depicting the life of Temudjin, the man who would come to be known as Genghis Khan. The story begins in the Year of the Black Rat (1172 C.E.) A 9-year-old Temudjin (Odnyam Odsuren) is told by his father, Esugei (Ba Sen) that it is time for him to pick his bride. Because his father had abducted the wife of a warrior from a rival [...]

Since 1989, there have been six Batman films: Two starring Michael Keaton, one with Val Kilmer, one with George Clooney, and now two with Christian Bale. In these films, Batman has fought a line-up of villains that includes, we’ll go order: the Joker (Jack Nicholson), the Penguin (Danny DeVito), Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), Harvey Dent/Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones), the Riddler (Jim Carrey), Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman), and Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy). In his latest venture, “The Dark Knight,” Batman comes full circle again tackling the Joker (Heath Ledger). (Scarecrow makes a 10-second early cameo, and Harvey Dent/Two-Face (Aaron Eckhart) is again featured, but more on that later.)
Why is the Joker back in action? Because of all of Batman’s arch rivals, Joker is the most intriguing but also the most repellent. Not that you would have known that by watching the 1960s TV series, Cesar Romero played the role, or even by viewing Tim Burton’s 1989 film, in [...]

Hellboy is unique in the world of superheroes. He was conjured from hell by the Nazis, but he’s a good guy who watches too much TV, and enjoys a fine cigar, Baby Ruth, and the touch of a soft kitten. His weapons of choice are his rock hard Right Hand of Doom and a great, big gun. In his debut feature, he and his fellow members of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense confronted a resurrected Grigori Rasputin (Karel Roden), his blue-eyed gal named Ilsa (Bridget Hodson), a clockwork Nazi assassin named Kroenen, and a demon called Sammael.
Four years have passed since “Red” made the leap from Mike Mignola’s comic book to the big screen, and, finally, he returns in “Hellboy II: The Golden Army.” Also written and helmed by Mexican uber-director, the film begins with a flashback. An adolescent Hellboy begs Professor Broom (John Hurt) to tell him a story before he goes to bed. The professor [...]

Studios like an actor who is a “sure thing,” and Will Smith is one of those. He’s an extremely bankable superstar who is seemingly loved by all age groups and ethnicities, because he’s likable. Look at his top four grossing films, ranked in order from highest to lowest, “Independence Day,” “I Am Legend,” “Men in Black,” and “Men in Black II,” and you will see that, with one exception, his biggest successes have come from his ability to bring comic relief to an action film. And if you’ve seen the trailer for his latest film, “Hancock,” it looks like that formula continues. But does it?
John Hancock is a boozing, foul tempered, easily angered guy who just doesn’t give a shit. In the beginning of the film, he’s drunk, spread out on a bus stop bench, when a young boy approaches him and points to a TV. “Bad guys,” the kid says. “What, you want a cookie?
Ami (Minase Yashiro) is your typical high school student. She hangs out with her friend, plays basketball, and watches over her younger brother, Yu (Ryosuke Kawamura), who, unbeknownst to her is being bullied by the son of a yakuza and his friends. The gang extorts money from Yu and his friend Takeshi, and when they can’t produce the funds, they beat them up. But it isn’t about the money, the bully says, he just likes to watch them suffer. The situation culminates in the murder of the two youths. The police want to rule it as a suicide, but Ami knows this can’t be, especially when she finds Yu’s notebook in which he’s written a list of bullies he wants to kill.
Wanting justice, Ami takes her brother’s portrait and visits the parents of one of the bullies. First she demands the name of the bully’s ringleader. When that isn’t forthcoming, she asks the bully’s parents to do something. But [...]

“Night Watch” (2004) put Russian director Timur Bekmambetov on the map. Based on the novel by Sergei Lukyanenko, it tells of the ancient battle between light (good) and dark (evil) and the man who will decide which side will triumph. Why did this Russian language film make such a splash? It’s a visual stunner with plenty of violence and “disturbing images.” What’s more, it deals with the supernatural – vampires, witches and the like – and it’s “hip.” Two years later, “Day Watch,” the second part of the trilogy was released. The third part, “Twilight Watch” is due out in 2009.
Thanks to Hollywood, those who want to experience Bekmambetov without having to read those pesky subtitles can see “Wanted,” which marks his English-language debut. Based on Mark Millar and J.G. Jones’ “dark” comic series, the film centers on Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy), an account manager who admits he’s apathetic about his existence. And why not? Being him sucks. His [...]

As the credits rolled at the end of “The Great Happiness Space: Tale of an Osaka Love Thief” (2006), I immediately thought of “Leaving Las Vegas,” “The Grifters,” and “Requiem for a Dream,” three feature films that have also left me with a similar sense of numbness and depression. All of these films are about addiction, and the people who fall into an endless cycle of abuse. But what makes “The Great Happiness Space” stand out from the other three is it isn’t fiction.
Documentary filmmaker Jake Clennell trains his camera on the “Stylish Club Rakkyo,” a “boys host club” in Minami, which is in Osaka City, Japan. Its twenty-something owner, Issei, tells us early on that his club ranks among the Top 10 most popular in the city, which is quite a feat considering the fact that the streets are lined with them. He has 20 employees, all of them about his age, who spend their salaries on looking good [...]

Around midnight in the city of Terminus, Ben (Justin Welborn)’s TV turns itself on, waking him up. Broadcasting across the airwaves is a signal that consists of pulsating and morphing images and an annoying droning sound. After he returns to bed, his lover Mya (Anessa Ramsey) tells him that she has to go home; her husband Lewis (AJ Bowen) will be wondering where she is. Ben begs her to stay, telling her that they can run away together. Regretfully, she leaves. On the way to her car, she encounters a man who has been stabbed. Reluctant to help him, she is caught off guard when she, herself, is nearly attacked. As soon as she arrives at her apartment building, she notices that this wasn’t an isolated case. There’s a heightened tension in the air. Couples are fighting in the hallways, physically and verbally. Inside her apartment, she finds Lewis and his two friends. They tell her that they were trying [...]

(May contain spoilers) Following a friend’s wedding reception, Kristen (Liv Tyler) and James (Scott Speedman) return to the latter’s family vacation home. This was also supposed to be their big night as James proposes to Kristen. But she rejects him, saying that she isn’t “ready.” Still aching, from rejection and a collapsed engagement, he calls his friend to come and get him. Then the night takes an even worse turn. At 4 a.m., there is a knock at the door. For some reason, even though they are in a remote location and it’s 4 a.m., they open the door and find a willowy blonde (Gemma Ward) standing in the shadows. She asks, “Is Tamara here?” Confused, they reply that she must be mistaken. The woman leaves. Or does she?
If you’ve seen the trailer for “The Strangers,” you know that she comes back, this time wearing a Dollface mask and bringing with her several equally psychotic friends – one who [...]

Have you ever felt like watching a horror film, but couldn’t decide if you should choose a film about zombies, vampires, parasitic machines, the anti-Christ, or the apocalypse? Thanks to “Edges of Darkness,” you no longer have to make a choice, because this indie film contains ALL of these elements in one place.
The film opens with a few quotes from the Bible, more specifically the “Book of Revelation” – The writers add an –s to the end of this word, which irritates me beyond sanity – and this tells us that a) this is an end of times film and b) we’ll be seeing some zombies. And we do. A group of them are noshing on all sorts of bloody body parts with great relish. Many extreme close-ups are added for a gross out effect. In this zombie throng is Heather (Michelle Rose), a Lara Croft look-alike who is touted as a “warrior.” She saves a mother (Kelly Murray) [...]
