Not yet another book on vampires!
You may be excused for reacting like this upon seeing this title: vampires have been done to death – in movies, in comics, in fiction, in non-fiction, in criticism… The only trouble is, there’s no real ‘death’ when you’re talking about the undead. They just keep coming back.
The eternal popularity of vampires, and new ways of interpreting them, is what this new book is all about. I must admit: I approached it with a somewhat jaded expression: “Surprise me!” And it did surprise me with its amount of fresh and intriguing perspectives on the nosferatu. The variety and richness of the essays collected here certainly offer many intriguing pages for both fans and scholars of the undead creatures.
The book is divided into three sections: Part I: Tackling Race, Gender, and Modes of Narration in America; Part II: Working through Change and Xenophobia in Europe, and the largest and most revealing section – Part III: [...]

The main guest at this year’s Grossmann Film and Wine Festival (Ljutomer, Slovenia) was the great Italian director Ruggero Deodato. Last year Roger Corman and Brian Yuzna were there and interviews with them can be found at Beyond Hollywood. Now, exclusive to this site, comes a talk with the director of CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, VIOLENT COPS, THE HOUSE AT THE EDGE OF THE PARK and many others.
In the following overview of his career, Deodato also reveals news about his most recent and upcoming projects.
Dejan Ognjanović: You have started your career back in the 1960s, and we are now in the XXI century. During the span of your career many things have changed. You began as an assistant director to some big names like Rosselini, Corbucci etc. and now, sadly, it seems that there are no such great directors in Italy. What happened to Italian cinema? What changes did you experience?
Ruggero Deodato: It is very easy for young directors [...]

PARASOMNIA is one of this year’s most exciting horror films. It’s directed by William Malone, whose previous credits have not fully prepared us for this fine and original little horror. His THE CREATURE (aka THE TITAN FIND) was a watchable, but derivative rip-off of ALIEN starring two exciting creatures: a rubber alien, and Klaus Kinski. THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL had some very nice images, but the story was silly and mostly void of spirit, which was only partially redeemed by Geoffrey Rush impersonating Vincent Price. Finally, FEARDOTCOM had such bad reviews that I have yet to subject myself to it. So far, Malone’s episode in the season I of MASTERS OF HORROR (”Fair-Haired Child”) was the best example that, with the right kind of material, he could make something above average.
But, forget any prejudice entering PARASOMNIA. It has no real precedent in Malone’s opus. Let us hope that it represents a new direction, because this is a horror film [...]

The guys of the ‘Cultographies’ series are back at it again, with some new titles! We’ve already presented their first three books on this site: THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, DONNIE DARKO and THIS IS SPINAL TAP. You’ll remember them as the slightly more accessible variety of what BFI is doing in their ‘classics’ series: small, serious but readable accounts of the production, evaluation and influence of some major modern titles – in this case, devoted entirely to ”the weird and wonderful world of cult cinema”. The series editors, Ernest Mathijs and Jamie Sexton, now proudly present Jim Barratt’s analysis of Peter Jackson’s cult classic, BAD TASTE.
In its form, the book stays close to that envisioned for the whole series: it opens with a personal note (how the author came across the film, what it meant for him back then, what it means for him now), continues with behind-the-scenes facts of the painful birth process (always a fun read when [...]

Before there were genres, before there was Hollywood in its full glory, the cinema as art (but also as entertainment) flourished in Europe. The results were nowhere more astounding, groundbreaking nor more influential than in the war-torn Germany in the second and third decades of the XX century. The films produced in that era are rightly considered among the most groundbreaking ones ever made. The geniuses who worked at that time, like Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau and Fritz Lang, are the among the founding fathers of cinematic language still used today, while their works, and the works of their less famous colleagues, have stood the test of time as the real gems of the silent era.
The classic titles of this period include THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI, THE GOLEM, NOSFERATU, FAUST, THE LAST LAUGH, DR MABUSE: THE GAMBLER, M, METROPOLIS, THE HANDS OF ORLAC and many others, still cherished by true cinephiles. Their authors urged to establish the young medium as [...]

Brian Yuzna was a special guest at this year’s Grossmann Festival of Film and Wine in Ljutomer, Slovenia, where he was given the newly established ReanimaCat award for special achievements in Horror/Fantasy cinema. He turned out to be a warm, kind, friendly person, always ready to talk to fans and obviously pleased to be in this region and at this particular festival devoted to low budget and genre cinema. He participated in the lecture devoted to H. P. Lovecraft given by Dejan Ognjanovic. Since his grandparents originated from Slovenia, he was kind enough to donate two prints of the films he produced and directed to Slovenian Cinematheque: RE-ANIMATOR and SOCIETY.
The following is the interview he gave to Serbian film critic and author, Dejan Ognjanovic.
Dejan Ognjanovic: My first question is the most obvious one: why horror? You seem to have specialized in this particular genre. Although there are elements of fantasy, action, black comedy etc. in some of your [...]

Roger Corman was a special guest at this year’s Grossmann Festival of Film and Wine in Ljutomer, Slovenia, where he was given the Vicious Cat award for life achievement. Still vital at 82 and enthusiastic about his films and the fresh DEATH RACE remake (which he co-produced), Corman talked to the festival audience and also devoted some time to answer the questions of his most devoted fans from this part of Europe. Other than DEATH RACE (which, according to him, goes “straight for the throat” eschewing the social commentary and satire), he also announced several creature films that he’s working on (like CYCLOPS for Sci-Fi channel).
ROGER CORMAN INTERVIEW BY DEJAN OGNJANOVIC
My questions had mostly to do with his gothic horror films. Here is that part of the discussion:

There are special effects that no Hollywood blockbuster can create, and magic that no money can buy. It is the magic of humanity that no CGI can recreate or substitute – the magic of perfectly cast actors whose alchemy transcends (and renders laughable) the puerile “special effects” of the generic horror products. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN lets the right kind of magic into its horror story and transcends the genre. It is immaterial whether you like horror or not: it is simply a great film.
Kåre Hedebrant plays Oscar, a blond bullied boy who dreams of revenge: the first words we hear from him are: “Squeal now. Squeal like a pig.” Later he will re-enact the “Are you talking to me” routine from THE TAXI DRIVER. But he’s not a psycho: he’s just trying to survive and remain sane in the cold, unfriendly environment.
Lina Leandersson, as raven-haired Eli, comes to the rescue. She warns him right from the start that [...]

This book is another one in the long and precious series ‘Short Cuts’ by Wallflower, made up of short guides to various aspects of cinema. The series includes titles like CRIME FILM: Investigating The Scene, SHAKESPEARE ON FILM: Such Things as Dreams Are Made Of, WAR CINEMA: Hollywood on the Front Line, THE NEW HOLLYWOOD: From Bonnie and Clyde to Star Wars, FILM NOIR: From Berlin to Sin City, THE HORROR GENRE: From Beelzebub to Blair Witch and dozens of others.
The high standards established in the previous books are met in this one as well. No big surprise since the author, Barry Keith Grant, is the professor of Popular Culture and Film at Brock University and is one of the leading authorities on film genre – among other things, he is the editor of the three huge volumes of the indispensable FILM GENRE READER. No wonder, then, that he provides this highly readable, informative and authoritative introduction to all issues [...]

John Carpenter has been variously labelled a “maverick”, a “horror director”, an “auteur”, even “the last genre filmmaker in America.” Unlike some of his more talkative and self-reflective colleagues like David Cronenberg or George Romero, he has always remained rather tight-lipped when it came to deeper analysis of his motifs, themes and ideas, preferring his movies to speak for themselves and sometimes even humorously downplaying his own status and importance. Yet, he remains the only director whose not one but two titles (HALLOWEEN and THE THING) can rightly claim their place among the top-ten horror films ever made, so we should not really take his word that he’s not much more than a hack. Carpenter remains one of the most underrated modern American directors (and, frankly, his films from the past 10 or 15 years did not do much to change his status) but this selection of essays provides a full and comprehensive insight into the best work of this [...]

I guess I was subconsciously expecting this book to be a letdown. The first two in the Cultographies series were excellent and very much to the point: so, at least one had to be somewhat behind, right? Rarely does one find a series made up entirely, and with no exception, of excellent books. And yet, the third Cultographies book is another sure-fire winner.
This accomplishment is even greater if we consider that it deals with the most difficult title of the three. THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW and THIS IS SPINAL TAP (previously reviewed here) are both universally liked and popular. They’ve been with us for several decades, they had the time to grow its cult following, while numerous articles, essays and whole books have been devoted to their meticulous analysis. Not so with DONNIE DARKO. Devoting a book to the most recent among the titles (released only 7 years previous to writing), Geoff King did not have the advantage [...]

Ever since 1963, when it was first published, the International Film Guide has enjoyed the unrivalled reputation as the most authoritative and trusted source of information on world cinema. For a good while Variety stood behind it, then Guardian briefly, and now, after one year’s pause (there was no 2007 edition), with Turner Classic Movies acting as sponsors, Wallflower Press is relaunching this invaluable publication.
The new editor, Ian Haydn Smith, admits in his introduction that he has a daunting task to fill the shoes of his predecessors, but judging from this new volume it seems that he managed to live up to the expectations that the tradition and title merit.
The 44th annual volume bridges the last year’s gap by covering the international film production from both 2006 and 2007. It assesses the movie industry developments and more than 1,000 films from 98 countries across Europe, North and South America, Africa, Asia and Australia.
Here’s another volume in the Wallflower’s Cultographies series of books devoted to cult movies. Of course, the book market is clogged by all kinds of picturebooks and ‘guides’ through the highs and lows of cinema, including the despised (but commercially viable) cult, genre, ‘grindhouse’, exploitation movies. But how many serious attempts are there which not only present an overview of recognized cult cinema, but also re-assess the canon of cult, and its audience? How many of them have to offer anything more than mediocre writing, funny anecdotes and colorful pictures?
THIS IS SPINAL TAP certainly belongs to the former category of studies with a serious, scholarly agenda (which, somehow, does not stand in the way of the entertainment and readability). Like other books in the series so far (THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, by Jeffrey Weinstock and DONNIE DARKO, by Geoff King), this one also uses a specific title to cover much larger ground relevant for its context, and deal [...]

‘Cultographies’ is a new series of books, devoted (as you might guess) to ”the weird and wonderful world of cult cinema”. In format and approach they are very much reminiscent of the acclaimed British Film Institute’s series ‘BFI’s Modern Classics’. Small in size and not longer than 130 pages, ‘Cultographies’ books manage to compress unbelievable amount of valuable facts and interpretations between their covers.
Comparison to BFI’s series is no small praise, but it is a well-deserved one: cult movies are still denigrated as cinema’s poorer, more colorful but somewhat shameful cousins, but the approach exemplified by the first three books of the ‘Cultographies’ series is as serious as if they were talking about CITIZEN KANE. And before some readers are repelled by the word ’serious’ I hasten to add that these books at the same time manage to be personal, entertaining and highly readable. If there is one quality to stress above all others, then it is the perfect [...]

Craig is a pathethic schlob whom we first encounter in a police station, questioned about the unconvincing digital ‘fire’ effects which we saw during the opening credits. Turns out the fire in his house killed both of his parents and a sister. He’s mad at the investigators for inquiring into his whereabouts, and just plain storms out of their office. The police is too sensitive about his personal loss to insist on the procedure, so they let him go. “We always know where to find him”, they reason. After all, only three people died in that fire, no reason to hurry with the investigation. As the matter of fact, they never return to question Craig again. The very beginning demonstrates a profound understanding of police modus operandi which reaches unsuspected heights at the very end of this Danish crime-thriller-horror drama.
We learn that Craig has some psychological problems. How do we know? Well, through a subtle hint: he goes to a [...]

Romeo and Juliet — a couple that has a very odd perception of their relationship — decide to buy a loft situated in a remote and run-down factory. Don’t we all dream of just such places for ourselves? Unfortunately, the secret owner of the factory, and his buddy, the real-estate agent, turn out to be sadistic serial killers (aren’t they all?) in the habit of capturing and torturing young and innocent couples. Why? Because they’re sick bastards, that’s why! Too bad Romeo and Juliet are everything but docile victims…
In John Guare’s play ‘Six Degrees of Separation’ a character wonders: “Why is it nowadays that imagination is replaced by style?” That’s the same question I had in mind while watching ON EVIL GROUNDS, a flick definitely NOT made for those who frequent theatre.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with the ’style over substance’ approach: there are some auteurs who made entire careers out of it, like, say, Italian horror-maestro Dario [...]

Here comes a classic: “a beautiful and meditative tale of love and humanity that explores traditional Japanese cultural values,” as the DVD cover informs us. Sadly, it’s one of those ‘classics’ that are more digestible to film students and film historians than to the regular public. And here’s why.
The plot is heavily shaded by the local (Japanese) colors, and we’re not even talking about modern Japan here. No, this is an ancient Japan of an isolated mountain community in which tribal laws make for some very cruel and non-modern rules. The village seems to be very poor, although the visuals seem to contradict that, since the poor shacks are surrounded by the lush growths of trees, flowers and various greenery. This land looks more than fertile to me: how come it cannot produce enough crops for these dumb hicks is beyond me. Anyway, since there’s not enough food, here’s a great way of dealing with it: when people reach the [...]

The King of schlock and president of Troma, Lloyd Kaufman, was the special guest of the GROSSMANN FILM FESTIVAL in a small Slovenian town Ljutomer. Slovenia is one of the small countries that came about after the breakdown of Yugoslavia, and the GROSSMANN Film and Wine Festival is one of the rare festivals in this region devoted to independent, low budget and genre cinema. In its third year it managed to attract some well-known genre names, like Jorg NEKROMANTIK Buttgereit (who, sadly, had to drop out in the last minute because of a certain shoot he had with Asia Argento!) and Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman.
GROSSMANN FILM FESTIVAL was honored to be the place of the European premiere of his latest offering, POULTRYGEIST: NIGHT OF THE CHICKEN DEAD. The film turned out to be one of the best that Troma ever made (in your reporter’s humble opinion, it is THE best Troma movie ever): it offers dollops of bad taste, infantile [...]

“Shikoku” could easily be discarded as ‘yet another long black haired ghost story from Japan’, but please bear with me, because it is much more than a derivative attempt to cash-in on the J-horror craze. While it was one of the first ghost stories to follow “Ring” (1998) and was actually playing a double-bill with “Ring 2″ (1999), it is actually based on a novel by Masako Bando, and its literary origins are visible in its greater complexity and subtlety.
Unlike ‘Ring’ and most of its successors (“The Grudge”‘, “Dark Water”, etc.), which were mostly urban tales, “Shikoku” is firmly rooted in the depths of the Japanese countryside and its ancient folklore. Shikoku is the name of the smallest of the four islands that make up Japan: its meaning is ‘four kingdoms’, but a very slight variation in spelling, depending on the type of kanji used, can turn it into ‘land of the dead’. Still, before you think ‘George A. Romero’ [...]
