The midnight showing was sold out and electricity rocketed through the air from the excitement. It was as if a viewer was attending a midnight mass for a Goth Christmas, and when everyone got home, Edward and Jacob would have visited and left presents under the posters bearing their likeness. BOOYAH!! Everyone at Hot Topics is gettin’ laid tonight!
The amazingly rampant popularity of the “Twilight Saga” more or less makes the plot summary of this review obsolete. But for those who have lived in blissful ignorance, here is the obligatory recap.
Fearing he’s become a danger to Bella, Edward dumps her and decides he can’t live without her. So he travels to Italy to see the Volturi, the powerful vampire ruling class. He’s got a bizarre suicide plan where he’s hoping the Volturi will put an end to him once and far all. Bella meanwhile, occupies her spare time by becoming a daredevil adrenaline junkie. During this trying period [...]

As with any massively profitable film, “The Blair Witch Project” quickly became the foster parent to a legion of parodies and imitations trying to cash in on the hype. It didn’t matter that the franchise quickly had its’ wings cut and was buried in a shallow grave under tons of unsold merchandise bearing a stickman logo. “The St. Francisville Experiment” is one of the better knockoff, mainly because it never pretends to be anything more than it is–a low budget horror film dressed up as a documentary that promises a creepy time. Albeit a blatant ripoff, it’s at least somewhat better than what you would expect.
There is a house in St. Francisville, LA with an unspeakable history, one whose past darkness is flowing onto the present. During the 1800s, the house had a cruel mistress of the manor, who tortured and conducted sadistic medical experiments on her slaves. Her evil didn’t die with her, and the house is said to [...]

With all the hype surrounding the new Dan Brown novel, you’d expect to achieve orgasmic bliss upon turning the final page. The plot was deemed mega secret, and by some incredible miracle didn’t get leaked onto the Internet forty seconds after the book was announced (apparently God has forgiven Brown for “The DaVinci Code” after all). Film rights were sold for an obscene amount, with Tom Hanks returning- hopefully with a better haircut and his Speedo left in the underwear drawer. Boxes of the novel were shipped tightly taped, with seals forbidding anyone to even think of opening them before 12:01 am on September 15th. A 24 hour toll free number was copiously printed to enable bookstore clerks to rat out their fellow employees whose curiousity got the better of them.
And so with all the fuss and bother the publishing industry could muster, “The Lost Symbol” graced the stalls a minute past the Witching Hour on 9/15. And so [...]

IRS auditors and repo men have encountered cheerier faces than those seen leaving a screening of Rob Zombie’s latest magnum opus. Where is Michael Myers, and what has Zombie done with him? Instead of a horror icon, we’re given a shambling hulk who looks like a homeless man with a pituitary problem.
“Halloween II” picks up just after Laurie Strode blasted Myers point blank in the face. Found covering in blood and wandering dazed on the road, she’s taken to the hospital. In a reverent nod to the original sequel, Michael Myers reappears to wreck bloody havoc upon the nursing staff–then on the parking lot attendant when he runs out of nurses. But in a flash it turns out to be only one of Laurie’s nightmares; two years have elapsed and she’s gone from being a good girl to looking like she buys her outfits from vendors at rock concerts. She’s in therapy, haunted by Myers and the death of her [...]

There have been a lot of films done in the “Lethal Weapon” style of moviemaking, many of them by imitators right here in the United States , but Americans rarely get the chance to see how it’s done in the rest of the world. Thanks to import video merchants, American viewers can see Korea ’s version of the veteran cop/cocky rookie/female cop/married cop formula. It’s a nifty idea that gets the blood pumping, but unfortunately Korea ’s “Never to Lose” doesn’t show viewers anything they haven’t seen before. Yet, despite sticking to the formula at almost every turn, the film is undeniably and vastly entertaining.
“Never to Lose” concerns the men of Homicide Unit 3, who are in dire straits at the moment. While Unit 3’s cops are full of ambition and talent, they never seem to crack a case. The team is comprised of Detective Koh, a 15 [...]

While the attack on Pearl Harbor has been depicted in films from the American and Japanese perspective, few people know of North Korea ’s involvement in the events that took place on Dec 7, 1941 . Now the efforts of Haan Kil-Soo, an unsung hero of World War II, finally comes to light in a Korean import from director Lee In Soo. While the historical events leave little doubt of the film’s tragic outcome, the movie is nevertheless an engaging look at a man whose contributions to the United States have been largely overlooked by history.
The titular Haan Kil-Soo (or “Han Gil Su”, according to the film’s International title) immigrated to Hawaii from Korea when he was just five years old, and eventually grows up to take a position working for the Japanese consulate in Honolulu. But that isn’t his only job — Haan is really a double [...]

Of all the characters in the Marvel Universe, you have to wonder why Lion’s Gate chose Man-Thing, a lower tiered comic book character, to make into a movie. Unless you’re a die-hard comic book fan, it’s doubtful you’ve ever heard of the character; and even if you did used to read comics, it’s even more doubtful you’re a fan of this particular one. For whatever reason, Lion’s Gate did decide to make the plunge, and the result is a surprisingly good effort.
In “Man-Thing”, former big city lawman Kyle Williams (Matthew Le Nevez) has arrived in the town of Bywater , Louisiana to assume the post of sheriff. He’s looking forward to a quiet tenure in the tiny haven that borders the local swamp, but quickly discovers an alarming amount of disappearances that were covered up by his predecessor, who himself also mysteriously vanished. Kyle’s problems are compounded when bodies turn up in gruesome states of disrepair, with plants appearing to [...]

The DVD cover for the Thai monster movie “Garuda” shows a gigantic, bird-like creature perched over a modern city, ready to wreak havoc upon the unsuspecting populace. It looks very much like your average Japanese kaiju film, the kind that usually involves an atomic breath lizard or giant furry moth, but unfortunately “Garuda” is anything but a kaiju film, both in genre and spirit. Although it has some interesting ideas and mostly decent performances from the live humans in the cast, inconsistent direction by the director and a poor script (also by the director) ultimately dooms “Garuda” to a life of mediocrity — if that.
“Garuda” starts promisingly enough, with a brief background on the eponymous monster, which we are told was imprisoned beneath Bangkok many thousands of years ago. Fast-forward to the present day, where a mysterious fossil is discovered deep beneath Bangkok , prompting a commando team specializing in supernatural incidents to be called in. Also along for the [...]

The are some fantastic zombie films that have elevated the genre to stratospheric heights, and there are others so spectacular in their badness that they plunge it to such depths that you’d need a bathysphere to reach. It’s safe to say that “Day of the Dead 2: Contagium” falls squarely in the latter category. Having nothing at all to do with any of the “Living Dead” films directed by the genre’s master, George Romero as the “2″ in the title might suggest, this cinematic abortion is best left to fade into obscurity and never be spoken out loud again.
The film takes us to Pittsburgh , PA , circa 1968, where a captured Russian pilot is taken to a military hospital. Discovered on the pilot are several vials of a deadly virus, which naturally are opened, and turn everyone exposed into the walking dead. Soldiers arrive to contain the outbreak, but not before someone tries to smuggle one of the vials [...]

If familiarity breeds contempt, then kaiju fans ought to feel distain towards Mothra and MechaGodzilla. If appearances in the Godzilla films were frequent flyer miles, the monster pair would have accumulated enough for a round flight trip to Pluto. Despite this unavoidable familiarity, “Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.” co-scripter/director Masaaki Tezuka still manages the impressive feat of delivering an enjoyable film, even though we’ve seen this all before countless times.
Taking place a year after the events of “Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla”, “Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S.” finds the atomic breath lizard hibernating off the coast of Japan while his robotic doppelganger (MechaGodzilla) is parked at a military base in a state of disrepair. The relative quiet ends when Mothra reappears with an ultimatum for mankind: The skeleton of the original Godzilla, now incorporated into MechaGodzilla, must be returned to the sea where it was found. Using the bones is an abomination to nature, the giant moth argues, since life is meant to be lived in [...]

Giddy over the surprise success of “Halloween 4″, the producers wasted no time getting a follow up into production. Their haste is evident, since the fifth installment in the “Halloween” franchise is an amalgam of great ideas that never come together to make a satisfying film. While dark and atmospheric, the film underachieves in the rush to get it to the screen.
Michael Myers once again escapes an apparent death in “Halloween 4″ by some deus ex machina factor, and is found by an old hermit. The hermit is either incredibly slow on the uptake or desperate for company, because he cares for Myers and nurses him back to health. Myers repays the kindness by killing the old coot, and returns on Halloween night to finish what he started. Once again, Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) is hot on Myers’ trail, this time trying to use a psychic connection Myers shares with his young niece to track the killer down. But [...]

There are certain films in which logic is some sort of abstract notion, something to be considered but never truly taken seriously. “Enter…Zombie King” is, beyond any shadow of a doubt, one of these films. It’s a giddy, weird effort that foregoes any attempts at reasonable thought in favor of giving the audience a wild and fun romp with those lovable living dead. Zombie and wrestling fans will rejoice and sink their rotten teeth into this bizarre cross-pollination of a film, if for no other reason except it’s something they won’t see every day — thank God.
“Enter…Zombie King” opens with the world in a perfect state of harmony — except for that little problem about a zombie plague, that is. It’s here that an enterprising renegade wrestler (is there any other kind?) named Tiki plans to stage a steel cage zombie match, using the zombies he’s captured and locked in the back of his U-Haul as unwitting combatants.
“Rumble in the Bronx” wasn’t Jackie Chan’s first attempt to break into the western market. Fifteen years earlier, Hollywood’s search for the next Bruce Lee brought Chan to American screens via “Battle Creek Brawl”, more commonly known as “The Big Brawl”, a martial arts/comedy film that pitted Chan against a variety of fighters, including a Mongolian, an overweight “child” in overalls, and a boxer straight out of a fictional “gag” newsreel. While Chan’s American debut doesn’t come close to ranking as one of his best films, it’s still a fairly entertaining movie from one of the premier talents in the martial arts genre.
In “Battle Creek Brawl”, Jackie plays Jerry Kwan, the son of an immigrant Asian grocer in Chicago circa the 1930s. After a scuffle in an alley with some gangsters demanding protection money, Jerry’s martial arts skills attract the attention of a local gangster named Domenici (Jose Ferrer), who, as it happens, is looking for a ringer to [...]

When it was announced in the early 1980s that American audiences were returning to Jupiter via “2010″, the Peter Hyams sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking “2001″, Toho decided to give Japanese audiences a trip of their own, and do it before “2010″. The result was “Sayonara Jupiter” (aka “Bye-Bye Jupiter”), a big budget effort whose biggest accomplishment was to make viewers appreciate the average “2010″ even more. “Jupiter” was a movie with the potential to mark the first time a Japanese film competed with a major Hollywood production on a level playing field. Instead, it was a missed opportunity, a movie that was too long and too self-indulgent for its own good.
“Sayonara Jupiter” opens on Mars, where scientists are laboring to extract water from the red planet’s polar ice caps. Instead, they uncover a mysterious symbol that appears to be a message from extraterrestrials that, apparently, have been active in the solar system for thousands of years. The discovery [...]

Godzilla’s popularity was on the wane in the late 60s, both in Japan and abroad. As a result, Toho management decreed that “Destroy All Monsters” would be Godzilla’s swan song, and ordered a film that would send the big guy out in style. Little did they know that the film would not only give the franchise a stay of execution, but also turn out to be one of the greatest Godzilla films of all time.
“Destroy All Monsters” takes us to a future that never came to pass — the year is 1999, and humans have established bases on the moon and the United Nations plays a dominant role in world affairs. Godzilla and his fellow monsters have been confined to Ogasawa Island (aka Monster Island), a kind of game preserve for giant monsters. The worldwide tranquility comes to a screeching halt when aliens from the planet Kilaak arrive on Earth, bent on total conquest. Seizing control of the monsters, [...]

Toho’s Godzilla series was so successful that Daiei Studios decided they wanted a monster of their own. Probably realizing they couldn’t compete at the adult level with the Big G, Toho aimed somewhat lower, by focusing on the children’s market. The result is a substandard kaiju flick, the potential of which wouldn’t be fully realized until 34 years later.
1965’s “Giant Monster Gamera” opens with a Soviet bomber carrying atomic weapons being shot down by the Americans in the barren ice plains of the Artic Circle. While the resulting atomic explosion fails to melt any ice, it does manage to revive the gigantic prehistoric turtle Gamera. Annoyed at being awakened from his seven thousand year hibernation, the giant turtle immediately heads to Japan for reasons unknown, and begins acting anti-social to the point where several branches of the Japanese military have to be called on for help. When all efforts to subdue the giant turtle fails, the Japanese Government is [...]

After standing on the sideline and witnessing the success George Romero had with his two sequels to “Night of the Living Dead”, John Russo, who co-wrote and produced “Night”, decided to make a sequel without Romero’s involvement, and presumably “cash in” on the name recognition of “Night” all by his little lonesome. In hindsight, that probably wasn’t a very good idea, as the result is abysmal and has been universally crushed by every critic, mainstream or otherwise, who has seen the film. It’s safe to say that if the phrase, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all” was applied here, then this review would end after the plot summary.
“Children of the Living Dead” picks things up with the dead rising from the grave in a small Pennsylvania town in 1987. As bad luck would have it, the return of the living dead coincides with the disappearance of Abbot Hayes, a dead rapist/murderer, [...]

Although completed in 2002, “Samhain” has been gathering dust in the film vault awaiting distribution. That’s a bit of a shame, since this inventive mix of porn stars and outrageous gore is a fairly good way to spend an evening. An audacious bit of filmmaking, “Samhain” tries to break through steel walls and for the most part succeeds despite an unimaginative plot.
“Samhain” introduces us to a group of American students who have traveled to Ireland to research the Druids and Celtic legends. They decide to stay at a remote cottage while they conduct their research, unaware that the house’s tranquil appearance belies a horrific secret in the form of a ravenous mutant lurking in the forest nearby. As the cannibal gorges himself on the students, the survivors do what they can to stay that way in this veritable slaughter.
Probably the most shocking thing about “Samhain” is how well porn stars Jenna Jameson and Ginger Lynn Allen act. They do [...]

Toho wasn’t going to let a little thing like the title character dying get in their way of making money. Five months after the original “Godzilla” first hit screens, a sequel was quickly made and released out onto an unsuspecting populace. While it is a fairly decent Godzilla film, the sequel nevertheless feels hurried and is nowhere near as good as its predecessor.
The film opens with another Godzilla, locked in mortal combat with the spike-backed creature Anguirus, being discovered by two pilots forced to make an emergency landing on the remote Iwato Island. The pilots are rescued, and immediately relate their tale to Japanese authorities. Just in time, too, as the monsters show up in Osaka and begin demolishing the city. The Japanese government now has a bigger problem than the one they were faced with in the original film. How are they going to deal with two gigantic creatures bent on destroying each other, and what exactly are [...]

The latest in an ever growing line of remakes of Japanese horror films is a rather underachieving effort that doesn’t measure up to previous attempts. This ghost story is long on eerie atmosphere and mood, but falls short in delivering a script that engages the audience. “The Grudge” is a passable spooky tale, but one that’s not good enough to warrant a trek to your local multiplex.
The titular grudge speaks of an evil contagion borne of a person dying violently in a state of rage. Anyone who comes in contact with this curse perishes, while the curse itself continues to spread unchecked like a hellish virus. When an exchange student (Sarah Michelle Gellar) working as a social worker enters the cursed house, she unwittingly gets sucked into the circle of violence and death. As more and more people suffer gruesome fates around her, the student delves into the history of the house and the tragic fate that befell its [...]
