It is no secret that I was disappointed with “Ong Bak 2”, though I’ve encountered fans of the sequel. While their points are certainly valid, I’ve watched the movie a couple of times, and it simply doesn’t do it for me, even with the epic fight sequences.
Star Tony Jaa ruined his relationship with “Ong Bak” director Prachya Pinkaew by demanding that he direct the sequel. And production of “Ong Bak 3” was, well, a disaster. The film was quickly cobbled together from an inferior script, and Jaa famously had a meltdown in the middle of shooting, rode and elephant into the jungle, shaved his head, and hid out with some monks for a couple of months. At one point he appeared on television in tears, vowing to finish the film. (Twitch breaks it all down for you if you want the gory details.)
I haven’t seen “Ong Bak 3”, but early reports aren’t all that great. However, the US trailer makes it looks completely awesome, so it has that going for it, which is a plus. This makes me want to go see it when it opens in select cities in December, with a wider release in January.
