I gotta tell you — I expect Peter Berg’s “Battleship” to be entertaining, with some great action sequences and probably more drama than you’d expect in an alien invasion movie, because Berg can do drama if he wants to, and he’ll probably want to in this one, if just to overcome that whole “based on a board game” feeling that’s inherent with a movie, well, based on a board game. (Even though the film doesn’t look anything like the board game, but never you mind that, it’s the brand that matters, dammit!)
But honestly, I don’t expect “Battleship” to be great, though something along the lines of “Battle: Los Angeles” will be more than enough. Frankly, the fact that Berg is doing “Battleship” only so he can get the studio to fund his “Lone Survivor” movie (based on Marcus Luttrell’s true-life book) is why I expect the latter movie to be awesome and this one to just be fun. And yes, I’m dying to see a “Lone Survivor” movie, so hopefully “Battleship” does well enough so Berg gets the chance to make it happen.
Anyways, until then, check out a behind-the-scenes featurette for the film. It’s mostly just Berg and real sailors talking about making the movie — just in time for Veteran’s Day over the weekend.
The film will star Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgård, Josh Pence, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, Jesse Plemons, Peter MacNicol, and Tadanobu Asano, and ships into theaters May 18, 2012.
