Behold the Fascinating, Glorious Trailer for Empires of the Deep Starring Olga Kurylenko

Apparently in-between “Empires of the Deep” being announced in 2009 and the release of this trailer in 2012, a lot of things went very wrong. The film was originally supposed to star Monica Bellucci as the Queen of some sort of underwater Atlantis-like race, but she left and was replaced by former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko, who still sounds Russian regardless of what character she’s playing. Seriously, when you can’t master accents, I dunno, maybe acting shouldn’t be your thing. But I digress. The film also lost a bunch of directors, and after years of delay, is finally set to attack audiences. As for when, I have no idea.

Here’s the trailer, which starts well enough, before it falls completely off a cliff with a bunch of CG creatures running around doing battle and such. The stark difference between the first half of the trailer (with live actors) and the all-CG second half is quite startling, and you wonder who thought this was a good idea.

Anyhow, as for the plot, we’re told that “Empires of the Deep” is set in a mythical world, and is the story of an unlikely love story between a young human and a mermaid. You know, kinda like in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”. Minus Johnny Depp and, uh, other stuff.

The film co-stars Steve Polites, Maxx Maulion, Pierre Bourdaud, and Jean-Michel Casanova. And yes, you’re probably not the only one thinking that all those names kinda sounds like fake names adult film stars come up with so no one will know what they used to do for a living. (Or is that just me?)

By the way: this thing apparently cost someone $130 million to make. Yikes.
