The awesomely named Benedict Cumberbatch recently dropped out of Guillermo del Toro’s horror outing “Crimson Peak”, and it looks like now we know the reason why — he’s in talks to headline the period action-adventure “The Lost City of Z”.
“Z”, based on the book by David Grann, has been in the works since 2008, back when Brad Pitt was supposed to star. Pitt will remain on the film as a producer, with James Gray (“We Own the Night”) directing.
Cumberbatch, most known to TV fans as Sherlock Holmes in “Sherlock” and movie fans as the bad guy in “Star Trek Into Darkness”, will star in “The Lost City of Z” as Percy Fawcett, a British colonel who disappeared in the 1920s searching for a mythical city he had said he had discovered on a prior expedition.
Besides the latest and greatest season of the BBC’s “Sherlock”, Cumberbatch can next be seen as Julian Assange in “The Fifth Estate”, playing the whistleblower and proprietor of WikiLeaks.
