Bill Nighy Will Lead the Resistance in Total Recall Remake

Bill Nighy will reunite with his “Underworld” director Len Wiseman and star Kate Beckinsale for Wiseman’s remake of “Total Recall”, which is set to star Colin Farrell as an Everyman who starts to believe he might actually be a spy.

In the remake, Nighy will play Quatto, the leader of the resistance in the film’s future landscape.

We now also know that Wiseman’s remake will in fact divert quite a bit from the Paul Verhoeven 1990 original, in that Mars will be replaced by rival nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai. Farell’s character, Douglas Quaid, is “a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy — although he doesn’t know for which side.”

Also confirmed are Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale. Since Beckinsale is married to Wiseman, and she’s probably the bigger star over Biel, I’m going to guess that she’s playing Farrell’s love interest/female lead. Of course, Wiseman could surprise us and cast his wife as the villain, which might actually say something about their marriage, ahem. (Or not.)

Below, the 1990 original’s Quatto/Kuato:

Is the studio intentionally spelling it Quatto just to piss me off?

The change from Maras bothered me at first, but the new setting works to differentiate the remake from its original, and the setting itself wasn’t the main draw in the story. but the intrigue and such. And the tone was very different as well.
