If these nine clips (yes, nine clips — over 10 minutes of footage) from Tim Burton’s big-screen adaptation of “Dark Shadows” are to be believed, this movie is not nearly as goofy and disco-rific as the trailers would have you believe. Which is odd, I think — why are they pushing the campy, “Look everyone, watch Johnny Depp act like a goofball!” vibe with the trailers, I wonder? It’s not like these clips are dark and gritty, but it certainly isn’t the slapstick, gag-a-second I was expecting given everything I’ve seen of the film previously. Check them out for yourself, check them out for yourselfers.
The film finds Depp playing Barnabas Collins, an imprisoned vampire who is set free and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants (led by Michelle Pfeiffer) are in need of his protection from the diabolical Angelique (Eva Green). What’s a vampire to do in a land of disco and precocious kids?
Also starring Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, Helena Bonham Carter, Christopher Lee, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Thomas McDonell, and Ray Shirley.
