Bourne 4 aka Legacy Will Not Star Matt Damon, or Even Star Bourne

So says Tony Gilroy, who should know, since he wrote the screenplay to “The Bourne Legacy”, the fourth entry in the successful action franchise, and has been tapped to direct it as well.

Writing in to Hollywood-Elsewhere, Gilroy laid down the facts, and just the facts:

The Bourne Legacy, for openers, [is] simply taking the title from Robert Ludlum’s book “but will not use the story,” Gilroy says. “It’s a completely original screenplay.” Secondly, “This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter…this is a stand-alone project.

“The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal,” Gilroy says. “Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy…the world we’re making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne’s return [down the road].

“Everything you saw in the first three films actually happened, and everyone who got into will be rewarded for paying attention. We’re going to show you the bigger picture, the bigger canvas. When you see what we’re going and see what we’re doing it’ll be pretty obvious….but Jason Bourne’s actvities in the first three films is the immediate trigger.”

So it’s essentially a spin-off movie to the “Bourne” films, one that won’t require Matt Damon to make a return, though if he should like to in the future, the filmmakers would be more than willing to accommodate it.

So … a “Bourne” movie without Bourne, or Matt Damon. At least, for the first one. Would you see it?

'Wait, so it's a movie with my name in it, but I won't be in it? Man, Matt Damon is so confused.'

  • Bad idea

Definitely a pass. Studios need to know when to call it quits. It’s a great trilogy, why turn it into a mediocre series?

I agree. A definite pass….if Jason Bourne or Matt Damon is not in the movie, it’s not worth watching.

i think its a horrible idea to do a 4th movie. if matt damons not going to continue, then i dont think the movie deserves to either.

i mean its a horrible idea to do a 4th movie without matt damon. otherwise it would be a good idea.

I agree, if Bourne – only with Jason Bourne played by Matt Damon. Anything else won’t be worth seeing, no matter how hard the director might try to convince possible viewers otherwise.

been waiting for the fourth bourne and have heard rumors that it wont star matt damen without matt its just another action movie so why call it a bourne movie at all

  • Greenwood

I agree with Asia – without Matt Damon, there is no Jason Borne. Like the Harry Potter Movies- they were made all together. low cost.
I do not know how to say it. Some one who was responsible for making the Borne Movies should have taken their head out of their — thought of ” bird in hand is better than two in a bush.

Hmmm. Well, I look at it this way. At the end of the 3rd film, Bourne is confronted by an asset who asks, “Why didn’t you kill me?” (or similar question). That left an opening for a bigger question– what if more assets start to get a mind of their own? In addition, Bourne’s friend/love interest is alive, well, and rather ornery. There might indeed be room to go forward with the idea of the Bourne movies, without Jason (David?) in on the action. The real question is this: Can they find ANYONE with a fraction of the skill and snap of Damon, combined with the cinematography skills of our last producers and directors? Hard to say. Time will tell.

Come on stop the politics, bourne is Matt Damon, the books have been great and it’s a shame they never followed the story as they could now have 8 great films. So best to leave it as they cannot agree and so leave it as a great trilogy, but if they had some foresight they could have had many more

  • not good

come on man, people are waiting to see Matt Damon as bourne and you say there will be a new hero. Matt Damon is the hero, Matt Damon is the bourne.
I don’t think you gonna be successful if you stick to that idea.
