Bourne Legacy Candidates Include Joel Edgerton, James McAvoy, and Shia LaBeouf – UPDATED

Reports have Universal officially offering the role in “The Bourne Legacy” to Jeremy Renner. So much for Vulture’s “inside” information that had Joel Edgerton the frontrunner to land the cushy gig. Does this mean Edgerton is now the Huntsman in “Snow White and the Huntsman”?

Sorry, Matt Damon fans, Universal is going to do another “Bourne” film whether Damon is in the lead or not. Enter: “The Bourne Legacy” from writer/director Tony Gilroy. The new franchise will exist in the Bourne universe, but not star Damon as Bourne. No one will be playing Bourne, in fact. The new lead will be a character name Martin, who, like Bourne, was turned into a Treadstone killing machine.

According to Vulture, Gilroy’s top choice for Martin is Aussie actor Joel Edgerton (left), who is a fast-riser, with “The Thing” remake and the upcoming “Warrior” with Tom Hardy already in his back pocket. The problem is, Universal also needs a leading man for “Snow White and the Huntsman” after failing to get Viggo Mortensen and Hugh Jackman, and they think Edgerton might just fit the bill there. “Snow White” wouldn’t require a major male name with worldwide recognition (Edgerton isn’t quite there yet), since apparently the plan is to sell it as a Charlize Theron-Kristen Stewart movie.

If Edgerton does end up on “Snow White” and not “Bourne Legacy”, Vulture adds that inside sources tell them there are two potential replacements — “Wanted’s” James McAvoy, who is also in the upcoming “X-Men: First Class”, and “Transformers” leading man Shia LaBeouf.

I gotta say, LaBeouf as a Bourne-esque killing machine would be a major, MAJOR stretch, but McAvoy could actually work in the role.

Bottom line: It’s good to be Joel Edgerton right now.
