Box Office: Funny Business is Good Business

Adam Sandler and Judd Apatow and their comedian pals scored at the box office — their debut film, the comedy-drama “Funny People” took the top spot with a $23.4 million debut, according to studio estimates. The film starred Sandler as a successful but lonely comedian who begins to take stock of his life after a health scare. While good enough for first place, the film didn’t exactly post “wow” numbers, and it’ll be interesting to see how it holds up next week with “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” opening. Still, it did better than “The Collector”, the latest would-be horror franchise from the “Saw” boys, which opened just barely out of the Top 10 at #11 with $3.6 million from 1,325 screens.

Last week’s king of the box office, the guinea pig action-adventure “G-Force” dropped to third place with another $17 million, for a two-week total of $66 million. After getting knocked down to second place last week by the furry critters, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” showed resilience, as the boys and girls from Hogwarts held onto the spot with another $17.7 million, giving it a three-week total of $255 million in domestic magic so far.

Other films making their debut over the weekend included the kids’ sci-fi action movie “Aliens in the Attic”, which opened at fifth place with $7.8 million. The film starred former Disney Channel product and “High School Musical” star Ashley Tisdale, but apparently that wasn’t enough to get the kids in the seats. Park Chan-wook’s horror-drama “Thirst”, about a vampire priest, opened in limited release and brought in $55,200 from four screenings. Look for it on DVD soon.
