Box Office: Moviegoers Prefer Meatballs over the Jennifers, Damon

Maybe it’s the fact that it’s the only kid-friendly film released in the week, but the CG animated movie “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” rained cash at the box office, taking the top spot in its debut with $30 million, according to studio estimates. “Meatballs” dethroned last week’s champ, Tyler Perry’s “Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself”, which fell to third place with $10 million, just barely losing the second spot to Matt Damon’s wacky “The Informant”, which opened at second place with $10.5 million.

Two other films opened this week: the Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy “Love Happens”, co-starring Two-Face, and Megan Fox’s debut as a leading lady, the Diablo Cody-penned horror-comedy “Jennifer’s Body”. The first Jennifer’s movie opened at fourth place with $8.4 million, while Jennifer #2 managed only $6.8 million in its debut.

Not exactly great numbers for the two ladies, but let’s put it in perspective: Aniston’s romcom was made on the cheap ($18 million), so there’s little doubt the film will recoup its losses once all the numbers (DVD sales, cable rights, etc) have been tallied. Likewise with “Jennifer’s Body”, which has all the makings of a DVD/cable hit. Or at least, curiosity. The fact that Megan Fox eats boys in the movie may be enough to make it a cult hit, especially if Fox’s career plummets.
