Speaking of Tom Cruise and the “Mission: Impossible” franchise… Consider this as nothing more than rumor, or watercooler talk for those of you who still have 9-to-5 jobs. But there is a rumor floating around the Interwebs (or, actually, on one site) that Paramount is considering Brad Pitt as a replacement for Tom Cruise in the Ethan Hunt role in yet another “Mission: Impossible” sequel, which would, if you’re counting, be the fourth installment. And after Cruise and Paramount parted ways in less than civilized manner in 2006, maybe this is more than rumor…
The whisper comes from Filmofilia, who said this:
Tom Cruise has reportedly held discussions with Paramount about making Mission: Impossible 4.
It was rumoured that movie bosses wanted Brad Pitt to step into the franchise to replace Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character.
Well, that’s basically it. No confirmations, no studio sources cited, not a whole lot else but those two sentences.
Still, Cruise and Paramount have a bad history, and as we reported earlier today, Cruise is looking to start a new spy thriller franchise for himself at United Artist.
In any case, whether this is true or not, it would be pretty interesting if Pitt did step in for Cruise as Ethan Hunt, wouldn’t it? And Pitt has already shown he has no qualms about doing sequel work, if the “Oceans” movie are any indication, and the guy knows action.
So, why not? It would make good business sense for Paramount, considering that the “MI” movies still have name brand recognition, and the current pariah status of Cruise…
