Never said that whites are superior hoss. I’m only half white myself. We do indeed need to work for what we get, and so do any other races out there. Heck, I’ve busted my tail putting in consistent 90+ hour weeks to build up my bookstores. There isn’t any particular race that builds the success that you’re talking about in a short time, all are capable…including whites.

But I still feel that it’s beneficial for actors to be the race of the character they are portraying. And yes, it did/does tick me off when white men play the roles of Indians, Asians, and Blacks. Why can’t Captain America be black? Truthfully, he could have been, but he wasn’t written that way. It’s not about prejudices (at least it shouldn’t be), but rather about being true to source material. I would be just as disappointed to see Storm, Luke Cage, or even Static (as mentioned earlier in the thread) as white.

Hey I’m white but I totally agree it should not be based on race but talent. What would be more in your face to a Nazi than seeing a black man come in and foil all of there “superior” plans. Let’s face it, the only reason why white people are still in charge in the world is because we were more ruthless and barbaric in ancient times which led us to be in charge of all of the governing institutions (churches included). I live around a bunch of white bafoons who believe that they deserve the best simply because they are white rather than their efforts. It’s become the white American attitude for whites to think they deserve or are entitled to things just because they are white. Just look a all of the white factory workers. WTF! How is it that white people who have been in this country for 100’s of years are doing factory work! And they want to get paid $28.00 an hour from GM or Chrysler when other foreign companies pay half or less for the same job and put out a better product.
Then you see a hard working Mexican or Haitian come into this country and own there own business or become a Doctor in one generations time. White people need to start using their brains again and stop thinking that they deserve shit because we don’t. We need to work for it! So get a grip on reality and stop living in your delusional “superior” white world when you’re really just mentally ill!
If white men were allowed to play the role of Indians, Asians and Blacks why can’t Captain America be black!

Thank you. There is nothing wrong with Isaiah Bradley Captain America, but this movie is supposed to be Steve Rogers Captain America, and that means following the source material about said character (which means casting a white actor, in this case).

Wow, you guys must not pay much attention to the source material. So many people get upset when they here things like ‘comic fans pissed over Will Smith/Cap rumors”. You bo-tards want to whine about racism even when it’s not there. The die-hard comic fans aren’t freaked out over some ‘black guy’ in their movie, they’re upset because it’s not true to the source material. Yes you can change Nick Fury, research the difference between the ultimate Fury (Sam’s) and the marvel ‘prime’ fury. Decades apart. You can acknowledge the influence of race without it being racist you damn brain farts. There was a black Captain America, it wasn’t Steve Rogers and he had a very different (and tragic) story. His name was Isaiah Bradley. This is were you see the difference race can make. Hell the big problem is Captain America has to be Steve Rogers just as much as Iron Man has to be Tony Stark, or Batman must be Bruce Wayne. The mantle can be passed eventually but these men are the ones that build the title. The ethics and driving force for good that was Steve Rogers is what made Captain America able to hang with and lead teammates that where so much more powerful. To change him to a black kid coming up in the WW2 generation would put him in the complex and burdened shoes of Isaiah Bradley. A Patriot non-the-less but not the character marvel published for nearly 70 years. Basically to make Steve Rogers (mandatory lead character) black in a time of such racial segragation would change him to Isaiah Bradley, WHO IS NOT THE LEAD. Get your heads out off your asses and know what you’re talking about before you shoot your mouths off. Do some damn research first. By the way, Will Smith has had some great moments, but in action films the guy tends to have a bad case of overacting. Really.

Real life example: last I’ve heard, most of the cast of “Avatar” were slated to be white actors and actresses. WTF, right? I mean, they could get away with Aang being played by a white actor even though he should be Tiebetan because he’s paler than most of the other characters and bald throughout most of the action (and therefore easily recognizable either way). But for Katara and Sokka… okay, if they can’t find actual Inuit actors to play the parts (culture I believe the Water Tribe was based on), they could’ve at least half-assed it and tried to find native American actors or something. Also, why is Zuko Indian now?

Will Smith is a damned good actor, but casting him as Captain America just isn’t feasible. He’s supposed to be a white guy, preferably with blond hair and blue eyes, because it’s so ironic when he fights the Nazis. Like… “Here’s your Aryan Ubersmench… in your face! *POW!!*” (paraphrased from… Scans Daily, I believe)

Now, this superhero comparison is slightly obscure-ish, but… casting a black man to play Captain America is like casting a white man to play Static. (Or more specific and better known – would you cast Angelina Jolie to play Storm in an X-Men movie? I think not.) There is absolutely nothing wrong with the actor in question, but it just doesn’t work to cast him for that specific part. With other characters, you can be more flexible; a black Nick Fury works just as well as a white one, but there are some where changing their appearance dramatically, including – but not limited to – switching their race from previously published media, just simply doesn’t work.

I agree with Jason, Will Smith is a good actor. I have read the comics, and ya i know that making Will Smith would change the original story, but honestly what comic book movie hasn’t changed something from the comics. Honestly, I think that Will Smith would make an awesome Cap.
