Or not shriek, since the producers of the CW’s “Arrow” have made it very clear (time and time again, in fact) that there will be no superpowers on their show. Which sort of makes Arrow’s longtime comic book girlfriend The Black Canary just a really attractive blonde in a skimpy black outfit and fish net stockings.
We can only hope, especially since actress Caity Lotz has been cast in the role. She is what the kids would call purty.
According to The Wrap, Lotz is set to play Dinah Drake on the superhero show’s upcoming sophomore season. Drake’s alter ego is the crimefighter Black Canary, a character that will be introduced as a recurring role before eventually sticking as a series regular. She’ll also become a love interest for Oliver Queen … which would make her like every other female character on the show. Pretty much everyone except Oliver’s mother and his sister end up being this guy’s love interest, or so it seems like.
It’s gotta be the guyliner.
Fans of the show may be a bit surprised by this. I think a lot of people were expecting Katie Cassidy, who plays Laurel Lance on the show (and Oliver Queen’s #1 love interest — like I said, dude has a lot of love interests), to eventually suit up as Black Canary like she does in the comics. That might still happen, but not this year, apparently.
In D.C. comic book canon, Dinah Drake is the original Black Canary, whose daughter Laurel grows up to take over the mantle. I’m guessing with Lotz being the same age as Cassidy, that’s not the case here. You’d need some pretty nifty time-traveling paradox plotlines for that, and as we’ve all been told, there will be no such Tomfoolery on “Arrow”.
Lotz is the second major castmember of “Arrow” Season 2, joining Summer Glau, who is playing a potential love interest/villain. Lotz has had roles in “Mad Men”, and recently starred in the indie horror movie “The Pact”. She also spells her name “Caity”, which is Hollywood wacky. Then again, when you’re blonde and attractive, you can sorta do whatever the heck you want.
UPDATED: Or not. “Arrow” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg tells TVGuide that Lotz is NOT playing Dinah Drake as previously reported.
Instead, Kreisberg said this about the character that Lotz will be playing (who he refuses to divulge):
There’s been a bit of misinformation printed out there and what I would say is, yes, Caity Lotz is joining the show in a recurring role and we’re really excited. She’s a tremendously talented actress. The character she’s playing is really the beginning of the story of the Black Canary.
Wait, so she’s at “the beginning of the story” but NOT the Black Canary? I’m confused.
Kreisberg goes on:
The character that Caity is portraying is the beginning of the Black Canary story and we’re really excited for the fans to go on the journey with us. So much of our show is about defying expectations, meeting expectations and exceeding expectations, and we really want our fans to experience the show by watching it and enjoying it and enjoying all the twists and turns and surprises the way we intend.
Here’s what I’m thinking: Lotz is playing Laurel’s missing sister. You know, the one she’s been looking for this entire time. Maybe she’s got plastic surgery. Who knows. Somehow, this leads to Cassidy eventually becoming the Black Canary. Or something.
