Candyman Remake in the Works — with a White Dude!

Candyman 4 (Remake) Movie, Horror Movie News — By Nix on August 15, 2008 |

The 1992 “Candyman”, which I saw in theaters, scared the crap out of me. It had me so scared I didn’t even want to think about the word “candyman”, because I was afraid it might count towards the five times you have to mention his name before he shows up to get his hooks into you. (I never saw the sequels; they looked like such utter and useless money-grabbing junk.) And so I’m a tad displeased to hear this news that, according to the horror fiends over at Shock Til You Drop, one of those horror sites that always seems to know what’s going on in the high-flyin’ world of big-budget horror movies, the powers that be at Sony are “mulling over” ideas to resurrect the “Candyman” franchise with the ever popular reboot approach. And here’s the funny bit: they’re actually talking about dumping Tony Todd and the black slave mythos, and making Candyman a white dude this time around! I shit you not.

STYD reports as such:

Shock learned today Sony and the rights holder to the film franchise – which has spanned three installments – are mulling over plans to resurrect the hook-handed, pimp coat wearin’ urban legend made famous by Tony Todd. It’s all “early talks” (I was told one idea was to make the titular killer a Caucasian fella) with no writer or director attached at this time.

Now as I said, when I saw the original movie in the theaters, it scared the hell out of me. But of course, on later viewing, the film isn’t really all that frightening. I personally blame it on the loud speakers and darken theaters. Yeah, that’s the ticket…

Remaking Canyman with a white guy and tossing the black-slave mythos would ruin the movie. The taboo of the black artist falling in love with the subject of the painting. The Dracula-esque quest of replacing his lost love. Tony Todd’s classic training and voice, not to mention his standing in the horror movie hall of fame with Kane Hodder as Jason and Robert Englund as Freddy. I thought Derek Mears did a good job as Jason. The horror community wanted Kane Hodder back, though. I really would like to see Todd back. If not, they will see just how instrumental his personality, look and voice was to that movie. Freddy had a mask and so did Jason, but Todd’s face was used. At the very least, don’t change the race and storyline.

Considering the book “The Forbidden” which Candyman is based upon contains a protagonist which is also white i see no problem in this. It opens the door for another interesting interpretation other than the the race story in that sense.

If Sony is going to do aremake then Im oing to put suggestions from my own mind out, if it is a reboot and new canon to the fictional universe then the person I would like to see play Candyman is Michael Jai white, eventhow he is mostly a action star he has played villains and Anti-heroes in the past and he is the only black man I see with the acting abilitie to play a new Candyman. The love intrest that he stalks should be played by Traci Bingham, I say her play as the main character for simple reasons: I want to see a hot black women star as the main character, I want to see some nudity from the lead actress ( I dont think Traci Bingham has any problem being nude in front of camera so thats why I pick her), Traci has’nt been in many hollywood films in her career, and she has’nt been in any horror movies. The husband in the film should be played by Will Smith because he’s been in several Sony Picture movies, the most famous black actor, he has’nt been the antagonist in any of his movies ( thow he would be the antagonist of a villain in this movie which would be played by Michael Jai White) and his wife’s character would be portrayed by Traci Bingham, buts thats all just what I think Sony Pictures and the franchise owner should do and what I would like to see!

Um this is just stupid…I mean really. In most cases the race of the villain really didn’t matter. COuld Freddy, Jason, or een Michael Myers have been black and have the same backstory, sure, cast the right person and you can make it work (Ultimate Nick Fury/Sam Jackson in Iron Man, Alicia Masters in FF movies). But to completely change the character is to take away whats not only recognizeable but whats love. The fact that Candyman was a former slave, the taboo love affair that led to his untimely and violent death, and as someone mentioned the “Dracula-esque” search for a replacement of that same love are what made the character a tragic villain, and yet thats what they want to remove. COme one. This is just gonna make him some murdering hookhanded psycho spirit…haven’t seen anything like that before.
