Captain America: The First Avenger Super Bowl Trailer Kicks Some Serious Ass

Chris Evans as Captain America. Can he pull it off? Well he better, because if Evans doesn’t convince as the Cap’n, then that “Avengers” movie is gonna look mighty weak. We know Evans can do the handsome, square-jaw Steve Rogers, but can he convince in the red white and blue suit and shield? See for yourself and decide in the first-ever trailer, a quickie 30-second Super Bowl spot for Joe Johnston’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”.

Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Steve Rogers is inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, Rogers gets rejected, but later offered the opportunity to take part in a special experiment called Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers is administered the Super-Solider Serum and bombarded by “vita-rays,” awakening from the treatment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and battle savvy, Captain America embarks on a war against evil.

Starring Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Hayley Atwell, Hugo Weaving, Toby Jones and directed by Joe Johnston.

Eat some shield July 22, 2011.

And the naysayers retract their hatred. LOL. This looks sweet. Cap looks great. Skinny Steve Rogers was awesome, the Howling Commandos look great (and gritty) and loving the Red Skull!!! Seriously!! Best translated comic villain yet.

Looks good, although I hope we can see a full lenght trailer soon.

Red Skull looks just like the one in the books, and skinny Steve Rogers is SO well done!.

I’m still not sold. I like the overall tone of the movie (such as we’ve seen anyways) but that scene at the end with him cowering behind his shield as his lady friend shoots at him makes me nervous for the entire movie. Captain Amercia flinching when someone shoots at him and then responds with a stunned, teen heart throb look is NOT the Cap! The scene should play out with him asking her what she thinks, she shoots at him, he deflects it without flinching, she says, “it works,” and then Cap says, “Of course it works.”

It takes more than an ability to furrow your brow and pack on some extra pounds of muscle to play a pure character like Captain America or Superman.

I realize how silly it is to judge a movie based on one tiny scene from a 30 second trailer… but I gotta call it like I see it. I remained unsold on Joe Johnston’s ability to deliver.

That would probably be when he first got the sheild first of all, and wasn’t exactly expecting her to shoot at him. It’d be like if you were talking to a friend and they pulled a gun and shot at you. He was shocked. Second of all the serum gave him strength, speed, etc, but not bullheaded confidence. He gained that with each use of his new abilities and after several times in battle. Yes he’s a natural leader, but he’s still human. You have the Cap that’s lead the Avengers, beaten his enemies several times, walked fearlessly up to an Infinity gauntlet wearing Thanos, and more. But he didn’t start like that. We’re seeing his first missions, not the walking legend.

      • Shazam!

I’ve no doubt you’re right about that being the first time he’s used that shield (otherwise it’d be painted) but should he have had experience with his first shield already by this point – hence the reason he’s getting a new one? Why would he be looking for a new shield if he hadn’t already been through battle enough to know that his old one wasn’t cutting it? Would he look around stunned if he was ambushed? Plus, part of what the super soldier serum is supposed to give him are enhanced reflexes. And regardless of where in the story it happens, Steve Rogers is no bumbling idiot looking to impress a girl. Did we see Bruce Wayne staring at Alfred with a shocked dumb look out of an Archie comic after he smashed the head pieces that didn’t meet their specs? No, because regardless of experience the resolve is part of the character.

In my opinion – from what I’ve seen – Captain America does not look like he has the personal character that he is well known for, whereas his lady friend appears to have it.

You’re still not taking into account that it was completely unexpected. In battle is one thing, he’d be alert and ready for things, even in his early missions. But standing there just holding it and an ally and friend just pulls a gun and opens fire, that’d catch you off guard, enhanced reflexes or not. and comparing him to Batman (which I somehow knew was coming) isnt exactly fair. Bruce trained his body to get where he is. he knows how it works, and what he is and isn’t capable of. This is all new to Steve, and like Lexavi said he’s not used to having this body and this skill set. Also Bruce was told by Alfred that they were brittle, and it wasn’t a danger to him, where as getting shot at, sheild and serum or not is dangerous. PLUS his last sheild wasn’t nearly as tough so maybe he was expecting the bullet to not richochet.

I agree… I was expecting more from the preview. So far, Thor looks much better, I actually tought that Thor will look more stupid. At the oposit, Captain america look more stupid then I was expecting. He is not suppose to be a joke, and I hope that the movie will show more serious.

@Shazam!: Your forgeting something very important… Psichology.

Steve Rogers was a skinny, sick, disable man for 18 years. Now after an experiment he pass from that to a big, strong and fast adonis. I think we’ll see some portions of the movie in which Steve’s mind doesn’t yet match with his new improved physique. It takes time to adjust to that and I welcome a movie where he walks the path from the shy, lack of confidence boy to the leader he later becomes.

I would hate to see him grinning and trying to deflect bullets with his teeths right after the experiment, but that’s just me.

    • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

Agreed! If he went from Skinny to built badass with no real learning curve. Sure he should be able to do things he wasn’t before and that most normal men can’t but he shill still seem a bit awkward with it at first as he learning to use the shield, and such.

      • Shazam!

Good points by all – but nowhere does being skinny mean you’re also shy, lacking in confidence and/or disabled. The comics (and the movie seems to support this) portray a young man who was physically feeble, but strong in heart and resolve. If he was shy and empty inside why would he have enlisted? You don’t think he didn’t almost certainly know that he was going to fail the physical? So why put yourself through that? Because he believed in himself and in the cause – self confidence. That’s what Cap is all about – why would a kid who never got picked for sports sign up to enlist? Why else would he stand up to someone like Thanos? Because he felt like he needed to!

With regards to this scene (and I love this has expanded from my singular opinion) I get what you’re saying about surprise, etc., etc., and how he shouldn’t pop out of the machine with a knife in his teeth ready to go – I’m just saying I don’t like the cowering behind the shield, coy, dumb look he has on his face. That’s a human torch look… not a Captain America look, regardless of where he is and who’s shooting at him.

And with regards to the Batman anology – I wasn’t so much comparing the characters (which I knew you would do) as I was comparing how different film-makers approach the personal growth of the character. Nolan got the laugh without reducing the character, Johnston and Marvel “appear” to be looking for laughs at the expense of the character.

JUST MY OPINION based on a 30 sec. trailer and ready to be proved wrong this summer! But based on what I’ve seen, this is what I’m seeing!

        • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

You make good points as well but there’s one thing we’re both forgetting. it was a woman who pulled the gun on him. Conidence in battle or not, I’m sure that’s still a wekaness for him (approaching and being around them) at first. AND THEN she pulls a gun on him. Like I said even the most confident people can be caught off guard. You’ve never had a friend throw something at you and you barely dodged it, even though you saw it coming. Same here. leisurely talk and then boom gunfire. And the Himan Torch look, thats a human look period. He didnt cower, he ducked. You make it sound like he was crouched in a corner with it lol. And again…girl. LOL.

I think that you may be misplacing your general distain for Chris Evans by over analyzing the shield scene at the end of the teaser. I understand your point of view and for the most part agree with you. That scene however is a combination of a few things. First of all we don’t know what the timeframe is of the scene. To me it looks like after he is taken out of the Super Soldier chamber. He is given a uniform and is probably being outfited with weaponry for his upcoming battle. While in the arsenal department he picks up an unfinished prototype of the admantium shield. Curiously he picks it up and most likely asks if it does, what the scientists who designed it, intended it to do. Steve’s naivety coupled with his shock of being shot at by a friend after that question prompted his reaction. I see what you’re saying about the goofy look on his face. However that is Evans “acting” shocked and naive. No matter how confident he was as a scrawny youngster who dreamed of serving his country, he would still be afraid of being shot at! In context I beleive you will change your mind on this matter.

          • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

Couldn’t have said it better myself, and I tried. LOL. You took the thoughts out of my head and put them down perfectly. You’re scenario is almost perfect and i could see exactly that happening.

As for the Chris Evans thing, I’m sure there will be a groan or two when he does or says something kinda funny but there really shouldn’t be. We all have reactions like that sometimes, and it’s just that Evans has been type cast so much thats what we expect from him. Look at others who have emerged from their comfort zones and type casting to do some pretty good stuff. Liam Neeson was a dramatic actor with one or two action roles before “SW: Phantom Menace” and “Batman Begins” and Ving Rhames has put in some amazing performances that weren’t big badass gangsters and such.

          • Juggernaut

I personally like Evans. He has put in some decent performances, albeit most of them are similar in tone and delivery. Lol. I don’t think he’s a bad actor, just hasn’t had the opportunity to expand on his repetoire. I think that he’ll show a different side of himself in this film. He wasn’t my first choice to play Cap but from what I’ve seen so far he has exceeded my expectations already.

  • Shazam!

Perhaps you are right, perhaps not. Personally I’d place the now “infamous round shield” scene later in the movie – once he’s already had some combat experience – and as for everything else… we shall see! Good ranting with you gents!

It’s not about being right or wrong. Honestly none of us know anyway. Lol. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I’m not trying to discredit yours at all, I just think that sometimes without seeing the finished product us lot jump to conclusions (myself included, see any Green Lantern articles for evidence of that! Lol.) Same here about the ranting!
