At least according to ComicBookMovie.com, who quotes an unnamed “well trusted source close to Marvel Studios” as telling them that Nathan Fillion (“Serenity”, and “Avengers” director Joss Whedon’s secret boyfriend) has signed on to play Hank Pym (above) in “The Avengers”. In the comics, Pym is a scientist who invented various serums that allowed him to turn huge, tiny, and huge again, and tiny again. Basically, the guy kept going back and forth between being a giant and a tiny insect superhero.
Hank Pym was also known as “Ant Man”, the superhero that Edgar Wright is currently writing for Marvel Studios. So if Fillion has signed on as Hank Pym, would it also mean he’ll be starring in Wright’s “Ant Man” movie? Considering how Marvel is trying to create an interconnected superhero world, that would seem to be the case. Did someone tell Wright, though?
Aside from Fillion as Pym, CBM’s source also claims that “Desperate Housewives” star Eva Longoria (below) has also signed on to play Janet Van Dyne, aka The Wasp, the superhero who can turn herself into, well, a wasp-sized human, complete with “stingers”. Longoria has been associated with the role for a while now, and this seems like the more “sure thing” of the two casting rumors. In the comics, The Wasp and Pym were crimefighting partners, lovers, and eventually, husband and wife. In the normal Marvel Universe, anyway. In the Ultimates Universe, Hank and Janet’s relationship were a little, er, testy.
Of course, this is all rumor at this point. CBM says they expect official announcements later at Comic Con, so we shall see.
One thing is for certain: Joss Whedon will direct “The Avengers” for Marvel.
