Last we heard on the “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” live-action movie front, Cartoon Network was working on one with producer Don Murphy (of “Transformers” fame). But that was back in 2011, and nothing seems to have come out of that.
It’s 2013, and Sony is now trying to acquire the film rights to the 1990s animated TV property, with an eye towards turning it into a live-action film. Murphy is still involved, but Cartoon Network has dropped out.
“Captain Planet and the Planeteers”, of course, is the scintillating story of five teens from different parts of the world who are given power rings by Gaia, the uh, earth spirit, “in order to protect the planet from the devastation of polluters.” The tykes can combine their powers to form the titular Captain Planet, a blue-ish tinted guy with green hair and groovy powers.
As you can see from the pic above and the intro theme from the show below, “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” was shrewdly tailored for the International kids market. How you’re going to turn something this ridiculously PC into a “cool” movie for today’s audience is something I have to see.
