Casting For Superman Begins In Earnest

Because he’s not busy enough preparing to shoot “The Dark Knight Rises”, Christopher Nolan, along with Warner Bros. and director Zack Snyder, have begun the search for the next Superman in earnest. Unlike Batman, a role that has largely been played by big name actors (George Clooney, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, and now Christian Bale), the Man of Steel is a part that has usually been filled by unknowns, a trend that will most likely continue this time around.

Sources tell Deadline that

the studio is open to creating a star as it reboots the “Superman” franchise. The actor will likely either be a discovery, or an actor from TV who isn’t yet a big star. And he’ll be in the age range of 28-32. The studio expects to look at hundreds of young actors before making a decision.

The list of potential Supermen is endless, and I’m sure that, just like with the search for the new Spider-Man (and even the quest for a director for “Superman”), the hunt will be long, difficult, and fraught with rumor after rumor. Will it be someone well known, but not hugely famous yet, like John Hamm from “Mad Man” or Joe Manganiello from “True Blood”? Or will they pick a complete unknown and build him up into an instant celebrity?

Who would you like to see with the big red ‘S’ emblazoned across his chest?

oh, and, Cryston…you’re a damn idiot! Smallville is not the best portrayal of Superman by a long shot. it’s near the bottom of the barrel in mediocrity and I like the show to an extent. I beg Hollywood not to cast one single person from Smallville in the upcoming Superman movie…once again, I want a SUPERMAN movie, not SMALLVILLE: The Movie!

Look…. I have been a SUPER Superman fanatic for over 25 years. Brandon Routh is the BEST thing to happen to Superman since Chris Reeve. I can’t believe that they wouldn’t use him! It wasn’t HIS fault that the movie didn’t “make as much ” as they had hoped. Give him another shot, because if the powers that be f*ck it up…. There will be Hell to pay from us fans! Superman is not just MY hero, but Americas’ Hero. Please don’t let us down!

Brandon Routh. He is the BEST Superman since Chris Reeve. Don’t give us another unknown actor in the part.

If you casted tom welling as superman it really wouldnt be a smallville movie. It would be about superman, Tom Welling would accept the part before he didnt want it because of the confliction of schedules with smallville. Having him in the film would probably get alot of people in the seats, and maybe help this superman reboot not be an epic failure like Returns. I dislike Brandon Routh he was a good clark kent and thats only because he reminded alot of people of Christopher Reeves. But Tom Welling has been labeled the superman of this generation and since smallville is over in may and the journey to superman is over i believe he would be a great fit for the role. Plus hes still young maybe 32? So he would still fit the part that they are calling for. I mean hes been through it all from Clark kent growing up as a teenager to Clark Kent/Superman I think he would be a good fit for the movie. Although i wouldnt cast anyone else from the smallville series due to the lack of big screen acting that they have it would probably kill the characters. I mean we all gave Christian Bale a second and now a third chance so why not give Tom Welling a chance?

    has anyone considered jared padalecki!

I would like to see Tom Welling play the role of Superman. He would end his journey on tv as Clark and begin his journey as Superman on the big screen in 3D. It would pay hommage to Superman the movie when Clark ended his journey in the Fortress and left it flying away. Continuity in Smallville is what made the show successsful in my mind. It is all about the story. Smallville in itself is a reboot. Let it continue in the big screen. I also agree that Erica Durance and Michael Rosenbaum should play Lex and Lois in the movies

Rosenbaum barely wants to be Lex on the show anymore. I think Welling would do okay, but as successful as the show is I want to see a Superman movie, not Smallville the adventures continue.
