Cate Blanchett has played a lot of good girls and leading ladies in her time, but it looks like she’s ready to embrace her evil side for once. The actress has been cast as the evil stepmother in a live-action movie version of their classic “Cinderella” tale.
Blanchett’s casting is a first for the movie, which Mark Romanek (“Never Let Me Go”) will direct from a script by Chris Weitz (“About a Boy”, and more recently, “The Golden Compass”).
Obviously everyone knows the story of Cinderella by now: poor girl lives the life of a slave laborer with her wicked stepmother and her two fugly step-sisters. Then one day, her fairy Godmother grants her wish to attend the royal ball, where she meets the very single (and looking) Prince and falls in love, but has to flee before midnight. Glass slippers and other girly nonsense follow.
I wonder if this version of “Cinderella” will be that straightforward, though. Romanek looks like the kind of director who wouldn’t show up on a movie that was so by-the-numbers, so perhaps this “Cinderella” will be a lot darker, more disturbing, perhaps even in the vein of “Snow White and the Huntsman”, or the recent “Alice in Wonderland”.
Blanchett, meanwhile, is reprising her role of Galadriel in Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit Part 1: An Unexpected Journey”. She will also be back for the two remaining films in the new trilogy.
