Roland Emmerich, the director of “The Day After Tomorrow” and “Independence Day”, takes on prehistoric man in “10,000 BC.” And yes, the result is anything but historically accurate, but are you telling me that you actually expected it to be? From the man who, as mentioned, gave us the Ice Age in New York City and saved all human kind by killing a whole fleet of aliens with a laptop virus? If that’s the case, then it’s not Roland Emmerich who should be apologizing for the superfluous nature of “10,000 BC”, it’s you for expecting too much.
Having said the above, “10,000 BC” is indeed laughable when it comes to historical accuracy. But then again, I never expected anything less, and indeed, a true-life movie about a prehistoric tribe hunting woolly mammoths would be kind of boring. And so, director and co-writer Roland Emmerich (with Harald Kloser) has instead given us a good old-fashion caveman movie, complete with expansive terrains to [...]

Who? Horton, that’s who. The Jim Carrey CGI-animated movie “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who” took the box office over the weekend with $45 million. Not bad for a movie budgeted at $85 million, and produced by an animation company not called “Pixar”. I guess blatant (though funny) cross-promotions with American Idol didn’t hurt, either. This marks Carrey’s fourth biggest opening weekend, topped by the $67 million of “Bruce Almighty”.
“Horton Hears a Who” stars Jim Carrey as an elephant and Steve Carrell as the mayor of Who-ville, a town that just happens to reside in a flower.
Roland Emmerich’s “10,000 BC” slipped to second place with $16 million, for a total of $61 million in two weeks of release. That’s a pretty big drop, and will probably mean the film doesn’t reach $100 when all is said and done at the domestic box office. But since the film was made for a (in Hollywood terms) cheap $75 milion, the movie [...]

The reviews weren’t kind (as expected), but Roland Emmerich’s “10,000 B.C.” nonetheless ruled at the box office in its opening weekend, taking in $35.7 million at the U.S. box office, which is about on par with industry expectations. The (not really) historical epic also opened worldwide in 20 countries, where it landed at the #1 spot in 19 of the 20 overseas markets, for a combined overseas take of $25.3 million. Who says great special effects and generic storylines doesn’t sell movie tickets nowadays?
At the U.S. box office, the Martin Lawrence stab at comedy (and I use the term loosely, this is Martin Lawrence we’re talking about, after all) “College Road Trip” came in at #2 with $14 million, most likely thanks to its teen star instead of its overbearingly unfunny adult star.
The week’s other two debuting films, the Jason Statham crime caper “The Bank Job” came in at #5 with $5.7 million, which sort of reminds you that Jason [...]

Roland Emmerich, the king of disaster movies, takes a stab at ancient times for a change of pace. Well, actually, he already did this once with “Stargate”, in a matter of speaking, so maybe this isn’t such a novelty for him after all. Unfortunately for Emmerich, the reviews for “10,000 B.C.” haven’t exactly been kind. In fact, they’ve been downright caveman-like in their blunt criticisms of his film’s generic action-adventure quality. Head on below to see what the big boys are saying about the movie, and whether you should drop a $20 spot on it this Friday or not.
As I type this, there are 74 critical reviews of the film at Rotten Tomatoes, with a massive split of 68 negative reviews to a measly 6 positive ones. That ain’t good.
Here are some sample reviews:
Comingsoon.net appreciated the entertainment value and CGI, but little else:
If you don’t overanalyze it, “10,000 BC” can be an entertaining film. If you like CGI creatures attacking [...]

Because, you know, you worship Roland Emmerich and whatnot. Okay, so you don’t worship him, but you gotta admit that the fella knows how to make entertaining movies, even if they end up being overly silly and what have you. “The Day After Tomorrow”, “Independence Day”, and now, “10,000 B.C.” The trailer just looks like dumb, goofy fun, and really, isn’t that what we all need every now and then? Behold, more images.
A young hunter is forced to lead a small group of hunters to pursue a band of mysterious warlords to the end of the world to save the girl he loves.
Starring Steven Strait, Camilla Belle, Cliff Curtis, Omar Shariff, Timothy Barlow, and directed by Roland Emmerich.

A new movie trailer for Roland Emmerich’s latest, “10,000 BC”, is bigger, faster, louder, and more action-y. It’s basically a collection of action scenes and special effects sequences involving giant mammoths and other assorted prehistoric-y creatures as they rampage across the 10,000 BC landscape as seen by a German dude who really likes to trash American cities whenever he gets the chance.
Epic tale that centers on three stages in the development of primitive man, as seen through a 21-year-old hunter from a primitive tribe who must hunt mammoth to survive.
Starring Steven Strait, Camilla Belle, Marco Khanlian, Cliff Curtis, Timothy Barlow, and directed by Roland Emmerich.

Surprisingly, I find myself actually anticipating Roland Emmerich’s “10,000 BC”. Mind you, I don’t think this will be any good or any thing — I’m not delusional or anything — but I do think that, like all of Emmerich’s movies, it will be dumb, clean fun, good enough for a few hours of mind mush entertainment. In service of that, here are some new (and a few old) images from the movie.

The boys over at Comingsoon has a new poster for Roland Emmerich’s “10,000 BC” movie, and it looks, well, it looks bloody familiar. With emphasis on the word “bloody”, of course, since this version of the poster looks a heck of a lot like one of the posters for Zack Snyder’s “300″. Of course, poster mimicking isn’t a new thing in the world of film, but when a big-budget movie apes another big-budget movie, it’s kind of a novelty.
You expect the cheapo B-movie producers to try to trick the occasional drunk movie renter into believing their cheapie flick sitting on the videostore shelf is that big movie currently showing in theaters, but the big studios? Don’t they have PR budgets for new, original posters?
Here’s the “10,000″ BC poster (via) side by side with the “300″ one it’s mimicking:

Of course this isn’t new. There were two other occasions when I caught the “homage” by the studios.

I bet when you heard about and saw that teaser trailer for Roland Emmerich’s “10,000 BC” all those months ago, you thought it was something else, didncha? Or at least, you certainly didn’t think it was going to be a generic action-adventure movie about some guy from a tribe who has to “defy an empire” and “free the people”, etc. You know, generic stuff like that. Well, it is. Here’s the full-length trailer for “10,000 BC”. I didn’t know they had British accents back “in the day”…
A prehistoric epic that follows a young mammoth hunter’s journey through uncharted territory to secure the future of his tribe.
Starring Steven Strait, Camilla Belle, Marco Khanlian, Cliff Curtis, Timothy Barlow, and directed by Roland Emmerich.
All I can say is, “Camilla Belle, in any time period, wow…”

Haven’t heard a whole lot from Roland Emmerich’s “10,000 BC” historical action flick since the teaser trailer debuted earlier in July. As far as I know, we still haven’t gotten the full trailer yet. The film, starring Camilla Belle and Steve Strait (pictured below) as cavewoman and caveman, respectively, is due out March 7, 2008, and here’s a new image from the movie, plus the poster that came out earlier.
It was a time when man and beast were untamed and the mighty mammoth roamed the earth. A time when ideas and beliefs were born that forever shaped mankind. 10,000 B.C. follows a young hunter (Steven Strait) on his quest to lead an army across a vast desert, battling saber tooth tigers and prehistoric predators as he unearths a lost civilization and attempts to rescue the woman he loves (Camilla Belle) from an evil warlord determined to possess her.

You either love or hate Roland Emmerich. I’m kind of indifferent to the guy. He’s made some movies that I like (“Independence Day”), some I didn’t care for (“The Day After Tomorrow”), and some that were just baffling in their bafflingness (”Godzilla “). His latest, “10,000 B.C.” arrives four years after his last film, “Tomorrow”, and features a young cast of mostly unknowns headed by Camilla Bell and Steven Strait. The film is described as, “Epic tale that centers on three stages in the development of primitive man, as seen through a 21-year-old hunter from a primitive tribe who must hunt mammoth to survive.” Whatever that means.
Here’s a better synopsis:

Yeah, it’s the first half of a teaser. The second half shows up at Yahoo! Movies tomorrow. (via)
“Gone Like the Wind”: Is Peter Berg directing a movie about a horse? Yes, he is.

“Footloose: The Musical”: Yes, they’re remaking the 1980’s Kevin Bacon movie about rebel music, er, kids. Except this time it’s a musical.
