(Movie Review by T. Ward Porrill) The most recent cinematic adaptation of a Stephen King short story was 2004’s “Secret Window,” a moderately satisfying suspense thriller in which Johnny Depp played a reclusive writer who, after secluding himself in a lake house so that he may escape his fractured personal life and concentrate on his latest book, is confronted by a stranger claiming that the writer stole his idea for one his novels, and therefore must own up to his theft — or else pay the ultimate price. In “1408,” the latest King short story to be given the feature-length treatment, John Cusack plays a similarly jaded writer who habitually isolates himself in creepy and distant locales, only this time around, the writer’s past comes back to haunt him in forms far more terrifying than a stranger accusing him of plagiarism.
Cusack plays Mike Enslin, a prickly novelist-turned-travel writer who specializes in books about haunted tourist attractions, namely hotels. (Think [...]

(Article by Robert Lewis) Dimension Film’s 1408 has a lot of things going for it. For starters, it stars the talented and capable “King of Charm” himself, Mr. John Cusack and the always-lovable, yet somehow underrated, Samuel L. Jackson. Add to that a script penned partially by the genre respective Matt Greenberg with direction from Sweden’s Mikael Hafstrom (Ondskan — a.k.a. “Evil” — rocks!), and you got all the makings to classify it as the horror event of the year.
Guess what, it may very well be…
Hot off the front-page of his official website, terror maestro Stephen King himself released a brief message praising the effectiveness of the upcoming film:
“It’s a pleasure to be able to recommend 1408, the Dimension Pictures adaptation of my [short] story…This is a genuinely disquieting movie — the damn thing gets under your skin and CRAWLS there. For one thing, what could be more terrifying than a man haunted by The Carpenters’ “We’ve Only Just [...]

Poor Stephen King. He’s unquestionably one of the most successful and prolific writers out there (nevermind limiting him to the horror genre), but the guy has had the most terribly luck with Hollywood adapting his stories into movies. Basically, unless the filmmaker has either “Frank” or “Darabont” in their name, it’s nearly a guaranteed given that the movie version of a King story is gonna blow chunks. But wait — maybe not so much. According to director Mikael Hafström, in an interview with Bloody-Disgusting, “King was very pleased with the film, I’m happy to say.”
Hafström tells Bloody-Disgusting: “King was very pleased with the film, I’m happy to say. When you are adapting an author, especially one who has been around like he has, it’s very important that he approves. Even though the film contains more story, we are true to heart and soul of the short story.” Hafström also noted that King “really liked Cusack’s performance.”
Now king has hated [...]

I am cautiously optimistic about the upcoming John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson horror movie “1408″. Why so cautious? Because it’s based on a Stephen King story, and if I’ve found out one true thing about the Kingster, it’s that his horror stories inevitably end up very, very silly. (Giant bug in “Dreamcatcher”, giant spider in “It”, and giant finger in “The Stand”. See what I mean?) But from what I’ve seen of “1408″, it looks really good. (Or at least, no giant anything in sight.) And I’m a fan of the two stars, Cusack and Jackson. So here you go, a new poster for “1408″ via AICN.
Adapted from the short story by Stephen King, a renowned horror novelist Mike Enslin (John Cusack) believes only in what he can see with his own two eyes. But after a string of bestsellers discrediting paranormal events in the most infamous haunted houses and graveyards around the world, he has no real proof [...]
