From the outset, director James Mangold’s (”Walk the Line”) latest film, “3:10 to Yuma,” has two strikes against it: it is a Western, a genre that has been dying a slow death over the past 25 years, and it is a remake. That it succeeds is a testament to the performances of the two leads, Russell Crowe (”Gladiator”) and Christian Bale (”Batman Begins”).
Crowe plays Ben Wade, notorious bank robber and vicious killer of men. The film begins with Wade and his motley gang of thugs waylaying a Railroad Company payroll coach guarded by Pinkertons (led by a grizzled Peter Fonda). In the process of pulling off this heist, Wade runs across Dan Evens (Bale), a one-legged rancher and former Union soldier who’s fallen on hard times. The two men part ways over steel-eyed glares, but as if guided by fate, they run into each other again later that day in town. This time, however, Wade [...]

Hollywood just doesn’t make any good Westerns anymore. Heck, they don’t make Westerns anymore, period. The last good Western was Kevin Costner’s “Open Range”, and that was in 2003. I don’t know if James Mangold’s “3:10 to Yuma” will make a dent in America’s “We don’t give a damn about Westerns” mentality, but whoever put the film together sure did all they could to give the film the best chance possible. The director, the stars (not just Christian Bale, but Russell Crowe as well!), and kickass trailers. If “3:10 to Yuma” doesn’t resurrect the Western genre in Hollywood, then it’s just not destined to happen.
A rancher struggles to support his ranch and family during a long drought. Desperately needing money to build a well, he takes an assignment to transport a notorious felon, in the hands of authorities, to Yuma for imprisonment. But, once the two meet, the criminal tries to tempt him with–in exchange for allowing him to escape–an [...]

Russell Crowe and Christian Bale’s Western actioner “3:10 to Yuma” gets a poster (thumbnail to your left, bigger version below), and it looks good. Or at least, as good as a Western should look. Speaking of which, it’s been a while since a good ol fashion violent Western shook up the box office. More recently, Kevin Costner tried to recapture “Dances with Wolves” magic with “Open Range”, but the public wasn’t buying, despite “Range” being a pretty good old-fashion yarn. “3:10 to Yuma” may just be the movie to bring the Western back into vogue; or if not, then at least I’ll finally get to see another Western on the big screen, something you can’t count on anymore nowadays.
A small-time rancher agrees to hold a captured outlaw who’s awaiting a train to go to court in Yuma. A battle of wills ensues as the outlaw tries to psych out the rancher.

Lionsgate is apparently liking the buzz around their Western “3:10 to Yuma”, because they’ve decided to schedule the film to arrive in theaters a month earlier than expected. Instead of the planned October 5 release date, the studio will now instead bow the film September 7. According to Variety, this is to provide the film with “breathing room in the fall prestige market and more time for the studio’s kudos campaign.” Or maybe Lionsgate just wanted to get their Western out there first, before the oft-delayed Brad Pitt Western “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” could kill any audience available for Westerns (do people still go to see Westerns anymore?) when it hits theaters in limited release Sept. 21st.
A remake of the 1957 movie of the same name starring Glenn Ford and Van Heflin, the 2007 version of “3:10 to Yuma” stars Christian Bale and Russell Crowe as a small-time rancher and the notorious outlaw, respectively, [...]

Christian Bale and Russell Crowe do cowboys and outlaws, and it’s a dandy. Yahoo! Movies is hosting your first look at the Bale/Crowe western “3:10 to Yuma”. In it, Crowe plays a notorious outlaw who is captured (thanks to Bale’s tracking skills), and it’s up to Bale and a select few (including Bale’s son!) to take the outlaw to his destination — the 3:10 train to Yuma. Of course, Crowe’s men are on their tail, and if you’ve seen any number of movies, you know that Bale and Crowe are destined to partner up to fight Crowe’s old gang. Heck, you can even see that toward the end of the trailer.
Even so, this looks like a killer movie — literally.
