According to former Disney head honcho Michael Eisner, the Hollywood Writer’s Strike is over, with a deal having been reached between the two parties involved in the dispute, and that he expects writers to be back at work “very soon”. Given that Eisner was more than a little disparaging towards the writers at the beginning to the strike, he coming out to declare this seems like the real thing.
More:
“It’s over,” Eisner said. “They made the deal, they shook hands on the deal. It’s going on Saturday to the writers in general.”
Eisner, speaking live on CNBC’s “Fast Money,” seemed to hesitate initially about whether it was possible that the writers could still reject the agreement, but finally suggested the deal’s acceptance was inevitable.
“A deal has been made, and they’ll be back to work very soon,” Eisner said, adding, “I know a deal’s been made. I know it’s over.”
If this is indeed true, Hallelujah!

The news that the writers strike may be at an end comes to us courtesy of Kristin over at E! Online. Now I will add that Kristin is not exactly a full-proof source, but hey, she’s somewhat “tuned in” to the happenings of “the biz”, and maybe she knows something.
More:
We are hearing from several sources that the WGA and the AMPTP are “very close” to a deal, which could be announced as early as later today.
According to reliable insiders who asked not to be named, the writers and producers were in talks for nine hours yesterday and made a “staggering amount of progress,” as all of the major sticking points have been settled.

Well it looks like all our worst fears regarding the Writers Strike has come to fruition: the studios have said “screw’em” and are digging in their heels. Which will translate into TV becoming a vast wasteland of crappy Reality TV programming, and on the big screen — well, it’s still unclear about the big screen. The studios will probably have enough “ready to go” (or as ready to go as they’ll ever be) scripts to keep shooting for years to come — and let’s face it, how hard would it be to get a writer or two to rewrite a project under the cloak of secrecy? This is Hollywood, after all, where they pretended Rock Hudson wasn’t gay for decades.
The LA Times has a long and in-depth article on what’s currently happening with the Writers Strike — re: it’s ugly. It’s real, real ugly, folks. Some excerpts:
The studios don’t want to make any concessions to the Writers Guild of America [...]

Oh, those wacky Mainland Chinese. If they’re not doing something silly like banning the innocuous “Rush Hour 3″ for daring to have Chinese villains, they’re banning Hollywood, period. That’s the news from Variety, who reports that the Chinese ban came from the communist country’s Propaganda Ministry. (Geez, is it me or am I the only one who feels kind of squeamish that they actually have something called The Propaganda Ministry?) The ban is effectivelimmediately, and will continue until March of 2008, although they can always decide to lengthen it at a whim.
More:
Reasons for the drastic action are threefold and appear to be a mixture of major politics and industry issues.
First, the ban is another example of the growing rift between China and the U.S. as the former becomes an economic, military and political powerhouse. China recently expressed its displeasure over the U.S. sale of weapons to Taiwan and objected to Congress honoring the Dalai Lama.
Second, the film ban is seen [...]

The writers strike is killing me. It’s costing me a number of my favorite shows, and one of them, Heroes, has already found its second season sliced in half because of it. But wait, is that good news I hear coming out of Hollywood? Why yes! Deadline Hollywood is hearing rumblings that something may be happening at the renewed talks between the writers and the producers. According to DH, “a deal [is] seemingly in place between both sides.” Hallelujah!
More:
“It’s already done, basically,” the insider describes. That’s because of the weeks worth of groundwork by the Hollywood agents working the writers guild leadership on one side, and the studio and network moguls on the other. I was told not to expect an agreement this week. But my source thought it was possible that the strike could be settled before Christmas.
Best news I’ve heard all month. Now can I PLEASE get my 24 Season 7 back on track already?

So, um, the 34th Annual People’s Choice Awards has sent out their list of nominees, and all of Hollywood is afluttered with what movie got on the list and which ones were left out. I’m just kidding, of course. Hollywood has as much respect for the People’s Choice Awards as they do for, well, George Bush. But I digress. So who will be lining up to pretend they care about the hunk the PCA will be giving out come January 8th on CBS? The list is as varied as the awards show itself, with movies, TV, and music all on the list. But since we are primarily a movie (and sometimes TV) site, here are the nominations that matters: “The Bourne Ultimatum”, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”, and “Transformers” are up for Favorite Movie, while Johnny Depp, Denzel Washington, and Bruce Willis are up for Favorite Male Movie Star.
I don’t have any horses in this current spat between the Writers Guild of America and their members versus the suits in Hollywood. To be honest with you, it all sounds a lot like two rich guys arguing about who will get that nickel they both happened to run across at exactly the same time, at exactly the same spot. But hey, I’m probably wrong, and I’m sure a lot of working writers can tell me why. Anyhoo. Michael Eisner, who used to run Disney, has an opinion on the writers strike, and he thinks it’s “insanity” and “too stupid”. Read on for more of this enlightened opinion from the former chief of Disney.
Via The Hollywood Reporter:
Speaking Wednesday morning at the Dow Jones/Nielsen Media and Money conference, Eisner said writers had been premature in pressing for digital revenue when the model was still unproven, and should have postponed action for at least three years.

It’s official, folks, Hollywood writers are set to walk the picket line on Monday, tomorrow. This means film and TV writers will walk off the job (or actually, just not go to work) in protest of not being able to share in the profits generated from DVDs and programming on the Internet, the main sticking point in the labor talks with the big studios and networks. The unanimous vote to strike on Monday would make this the second time since 1988 that the writers have strike. No one really knows how this will affect the industry in the long run, but in the short run it’s already killed the Heroes spin-off Origins and is threatening to shut down the rest of the show’s season.
More from the AP:
The first casualty of the strike would be late-night talk shows, which are dependent on current events to fuel monologues and other entertainment.
Comedy Central has said “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and “The [...]

I have to tell you, every time I hear about the impending Hollywood writers strike, my eyes start glossing over. I can’t decide whose side I’m on, or if I’m even on anyone’s side. And from the sounds of this L.A. Times article, everyone is freaking out about the strike, set to go into affect November 1st, next week. Which begs the question: If everyone’s so afraid of it, and no one wants it, why is it going to happen??? Who knows. I suppose everyone has their own reasons, but it sure as hell sound like everyone is going number two in their pants waiting for the hammer to drop. What will the results be? As one producer puts it: “Next year, there’s going to be a plethora of bad movies — movies that were rushed because of the supposed strike.” Riiiight.
We’re used to seeing Michelle Rodriguez play tough characters in the movies, girls who don’t take crap from anyone, but real life is another story. Reuters reports that Rodriguez (”Lost”, “Resident Evil”) has been sentenced on Wednesday to 180 days in a Los Angeles jail for violating her probation on previous drunken-driving and hit-and-run offenses. She had actually gotten off pretty light, but the judge in the case apparently didn’t take too kindly to Rodriguez missing her community service obligations, and instead ordered her to start her sentence in the clink by Christmas Eve. But failing in her community service duties is not the end of it; on at least three occasions, Rodriguez was found to have consumed alcohol while wearing a monitoring bracelet around her ankle, which are more violations of her probation.
More:
The probation violation stems from a 2004 plea of no contest — the equivalent of guilty — to three traffic offenses in Los Angeles, including hit-and-run and [...]

Oh boy, I bet Warner Bros’ Jeff Robinov is regretting that he ever woke up and put pen to paper when he (reportedly) put out the decree that Warner would no longer make movies with female leads in the aftermath of “The Brave One” and “The Invasion” stinking up the box office joint. Over at Deadline Hollywood, which initially leaked the news, noted woman’s rights lawyer Gloria Allred has weighed in, saying, “If that’s what he said, when movies with men as the lead fail, no one says we’ll stop making movies with men in the lead. This is an insult to all moviegoers and particularly women.”
Meanwhile, the publishers of TheMovieBlog, who actually got a reply from Warner themselves when they originally followed up on the story, continued to wax philosophical about the ramifications of such an action on Warner’s point, writing, “And when such wrongs occur, we have 2 choices. 1) Stand against it and let the offending [...]

I can’t help it; any news, nevermind how minor, about this guy, but especially about his comments, just makes me giggle like a little schoolgirl. So Uwe Boll is tired of movie fanboys making fun of his movies and bashing him; but what Uwe Boll is really tired of is movie fanboys making fun of his movies and bashing him (always) and pronouncing his name wrong. Well, he doesn’t really say that, but I’m guessing it irks him somewhat that he’s such a bashable fellow, but no one really bothers to pronounce his name correctly.
Oh boy. It looks like action director John McTiernan needs a little help from his pal John McClane, because the big-time Hollywood director has found himself in a bit of a pickle. That is, he’s just been sentenced to four months in federal prison for lying to the FBI about hiring indicted private investigator Anthony Pellicano to wiretap a veteran film producer seven years ago, reports The L.A. Times. If you don’t know the name John McTiernan, then you probably know (and chances are, if you’re reading this blog, loves) his movies. He counts among them, “Predator”, “Die Hard”, “The Hunt for Red October”, “Die Hard: With a Vengeance”, and “Rollerball”. Okay, maybe not so much that last one, but the rest? Definitely.
More from the LA Times:
Last year, McTiernan acknowledged paying Pellicano $50,000 to wiretap film producer Charles Roven after their collaboration on the 2000 box-office flop “Rollerball.” The director also admitted that he misled an FBI agent who had [...]

Industry trade Variety is reporting that The New York Times reported that diminutive faux talk show host Jon Stewart will host The Oscars telecast for the second time in three years. I guess last year’s host, Ellen DeGeneres, didn’t do very well. Or maybe she did. The fact is, I stopped watching the Oscars about six years ago, which may seem like a surprise for someone who runs as movie site, but can you blame me? This thing has gotten more boring than watching paint dry, and that’s insulting paint.
The worst part about the Oscar has to be those endless introductory speeches about everything and anything. They just go on and on. And don’t even get me started on the singing and dancing and prancing around, and laughing at how stupid Hollywood people are when they clap louder for this dead guy than the other dead guy.
But hey, maybe it’s just not my thing.
The 80th Annual Academy Awards will [...]

No, really. Some genius has purchased the theatrical rights to the Midway game “Joust”, about tiny knights that rides on big friggin’ ostriches as they, well, joust on crappy 1980’s videogame graphics. Imagine the endless possibilities. Why stop with giant ostriches? Why not include giant turtles, or giant elephants. Or damn, wouldn’t a guy in a suit of armor hopping around on a giant frog with a lance be just aces? Eh, probably not. Anyways, that’s the story from CHUD via Variety.
Makes sense, right? Well not to the good people at CFP Productions, a relatively new banner that is snapping up the rights to graphic novels and (old and forgotten) videogames. Their latest is a doozie, as they have just optioned the nigh-impossible-to-acquire rights to…FUCKING JOUST, or as you may remember it, Joust. Yes, the mildly entertaining time-waster from Midway Games featuring tiny knights battling atop of super-ostriches and buzzards is due to become a movie because, let’s face it…the [...]

This is interesting. There’s no real movie movie news here, but since the Wachowski Brothers are such giants in the movie business, something as monumental as one of the brothers no longer becoming, well, brothers has to make the front page, right? Or, in this case, a movie news post. Remember all those rumors that Larry Wachowski was planning on getting a sex change? Well, it’s true, and Larry has now become … Lana Wachowski. That’s right, kids. You will now be using the wrong phrase when you refer to the Wachowskis as “The Wachowski Brothers”. Instead, they’ll just be The Wachowskis.
The guys over at Rated-M.com has all the details about Larry’s journey from bro to dame. Basically, it took a year and a half, and included female hormone therapy for the transformation to happen.
So how does this affect the production of “Speed Racer”? Well, probably not very much. After all, Larry may have become Lana, but they’re still the [...]

Wow, this is a major shock. Apparently actor Owen Wilson (”Shanghai Knights”, “You, Me, and Dupree”) may or may not have attempted suicide (no one has confirmed or deny that part yet), but what IS known is that he is currently in St John’s hospital in Santa Monica for treatment and is said to be in a “terrible state”. How exactly did this happen? Owen Wilson has always seemed like such an easy-going and affable fellow; you know, the class clown. How did the class clown end up in the hospital from a suicide attempt, if that’s what it turns out to be?
More from here:
We’re told he attempted suicide by slashing his wrists AND taking pills. His family found him clinging to life. Drugs have been rumored to be a problem for him but they didn’t seem to interfere with his work.
Wow. I’m speechless if this turns out to be true.
Update: 8/27/08 1:01 a.m.
Variety has more on Owen Wilson’s trip [...]

Friday was a bad day for John Singleton. The “Boyz in the Hood” director accidentally struck a woman with his SUV when the woman failed to use a designated crosswalk while trying to cross the street. The reports state that the woman was taken to a hospital after the accident, where she unfortunately died. Fortunately for Singleton, he seems to have been free from any sort of mind-altering substance (drugs, booze, etc) during the incident. Unfortunately, or perhaps inevitably, Singleton’s fame will probably come back to bite him, and I doubt if this unfortunate accident will be allowed to be just that.
More from CNN:
Oscar-nominated director John Singleton accidentally struck and killed a pedestrian, a Los Angeles police spokesman said late Friday.
Constance Russell, 57, of Los Angeles, died at a hospital a few hours after the accident Thursday evening, Los Angeles Police Officer Jason Lee said. Russell was not using a crosswalk when she stepped in front of Singleton’s car, Lee [...]

You won’t like Stevie Seagal when he’s mad, and the FBI has made Stevie boy mad. Steven Seagal says the FBI ruined his career, and turned him from an A-list Hollywood star making millions per movie to a Z-list direct-to-DVD kinda-star making change on 10 movies a year, where he invariably plays the same character with the same special forces past who proves to be more invincible than God himself. Now Seagal wants the FBI to apologize to him, allegedly for “harming his career by implicating he hired a private detective to intimidate journalists from writing unflattering stories about him.” You know, because Steven Seagal was a fantastic human being before Hoover’s boys supposedly targeted him.
More:
The 56-year-old has made 12 movies since 2001’s Exit Wounds – all have been released directly onto DVD, bypassing cinemas, and Seagal is convinced the leaked release of an October 2002 FBI affidavit linking him to the mob is responsible for his decline in popularity.
