Ridley Scott’s “American Gangster” is a movie that boasts two of the biggest movie stars in the world in Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington. Separately, Washington and Crowe can lay claim to the type of filmography that actors would sell their souls for, and they’re just getting started. In “Gangster”, the two actors don’t even come eye-to-eye until almost towards the end of the film. And you know what? That’s exactly how it should be. Before Crowe’s crusading cop and Washington’s drug dealer ever looks each other in the eyes, we have traveled the roads with them through their respective territories and come to know them as more than just cop and criminal, but men.
“American Gangster” opens in 1968 with a blunt introduction to Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) — we see him nonchalantly set a man on fire before shooting him five times at point blank range. Lucas is the former chauffeur and prodigy to Harlem’s reigning gangster, Bumpy Johnson, [...]

If you’re looking for the 2007 version of Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed”, look no further than “American Gangster”, which has the potential to win a bunch of Oscars with its combination of slick visuals and muscular acting. Just look at the cast: Denzel Washington as a Harlem drug lord, Russell Crowe as the G-man trying to bring him down, and the man behind the camera? Ridley Scott. I’ve loved just about everything Scott has done that I have seen, and this trailer for “American Gangster”, currently being hosted at Yahoo! Movies (here) looks insanely killer.
