It used to be you could just toss a script together and call it “Saw”, release it on Halloween, and the kids would flock to see it. Well that’s still sort of true, though not nearly in the same league as previous incarnations of the “Saw” franchise. Especially when there is actual competition in the widening “Paranormal Activity”, the little horror movie that could, which continues to draw in audiences thanks to outstanding word of mouth. The low-budget horror movie, made for less than what “Saw 6″ probably paid for one day of catering, pulled in another $22 million at the box office in the film’s first 1,945 screen week, according to studio estimates.
Mind you, not that “Saw 6″ did badly — the sixth film in the neverending franchise about a slick killer and his proteges opened with $14.8 million in its debut, much less than the previous five entries in the series, but still easily turning a profit. Thanks [...]

Truthfully, I know next to nothing about “Astro Boy,” other than it’s an upcoming movie directed by “Flushed Away” mastermind David Bowers which stars Kristen Bell, Nathan Lane, Eugene Levy, Bill Nighy, Donald Sutherland, Nicolas Cage, Samuel L. Jackson and Charlize Theron, among several others. I generally don’t follow goofy-looking CGI pictures or manga-based movies very often, but there’s something about this movie that keeps snagging my attention. Judging from the trailer I watched this morning, it looks pretty snazzy, although I’m still pretty much in the dark about the movie as a whole. Since the Internet is ripe with all sorts of information, I’ve included a brief synopsis to bring myself up to speed. If you’re just as clueless and out-of-touch as I am regarding this project, perhaps this plot summary will benefit you, as well. How genuinely helpful.

Imagi Animation studios is bringing the Japanese manga Astroboy and his jet boots to a big screen near you, and another image from the film has shown up online via First Showing. As always, I’ll come right up front and tell you that I’ve never seen Astroboy, although I am aware of its existence. Astroboy debuted back in 1952 and tells the story of a powerful robot boy created by a brilliant scientist in the image of the son he lost. Our hero journeys to find acceptance in the human world and ultimately discovers true friendship as he uses his incredible powers to help others and save Metro City from destruction. First Showing has an interview with the movie’s animation supervisor, Colin Brady, that is worth a read.
Some excerpts:
FS.net: What will the story focus on / what adventures will AstroBoy get involved in? Will it start with his origin and go from there?
Similar to Spider-Man or the first Superman, it [...]

IMDB.com has the “AstroBoy” CGI movie listed as being released in 2009, but you won’t have to wait that long to get your first look at the movie’s poster (thumbnail to your left, a bigger version below) and a first image from the movie courtesy of First Look. The film is being done by Imagi Animation Studios, which is apparently the same people who did the recent “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” CGI movie. I don’t know very much about AstroBoy, but I know enough to say that he’s immensely popular in Japan, and seems to have a cult following here in the States. Head on below for the poster, pic, and a synopsis of the story.
